What makes you proud to be a member of the VFW Auxiliary?

Our tagline, “Unwavering

Support for Uncommon HeroesTM

” speaks to me in JANEY FEHER

so many ways and it’s why I am proud to be a member of the VFW Auxiliary. My uncommon hero was my Dad, a World War II veteran, who showed me fi rsthand how important it was to love

and support all veterans. Listening to him made me want to do whatever I could to ensure all veterans knew their value and importance. Simple things like sending cards to active-duty military, veterans or those in veterans’ centers, helping families of those deployed overseas or just simply saying thank you to a veteran you pass on the street or in the airport made me realize that being a member of this great organization was where I needed to be. T e unwavering support I can give is minimal compared to the sacrifi ces they have made to ensure our freedom. Now more than ever, health care issues are so

important for those veterans already here or coming back from overseas. By being a member of the VFW Auxiliary, I know I can help get members so that our organization can grow in numbers and support legislation to help veterans. T ere is no organization anywhere that does what we do for veterans. Proud? Defi nitely!

What makes you proud to be a member of the VFW Auxiliary?

Knowing that one person JEAN HAMIL

can make a diff erence in the lives of our veterans, their families and the youth in our communities. Coming from a military family, we were always around veterans – active-duty and retired. We were always active in our community and volunteering

– it became second nature to us. When I became active in the Auxiliary, it was an easy transition to volunteer

What do you hope the VFW Auxiliary will accomplish within the next 10 years?

Membership is vital to our organization. I

believe many are working hard to encourage new members to join, but at the same time, we are losing our older members to death. In order to help with this, I feel a good mentoring program is essential. Too many members come to meetings and are left sitting there wondering what is going on. We have a great opportunity now with being able to allow males to join. We need to take new members under our wings and explain what is going on, what gavel raps mean, how to salute, etc., in order for them to feel welcome. By instituting a good mentoring program, I feel that would help members feel welcome and part of our meetings. I also believe you need to get new members involved by giving them a job to do and that would make them feel as if they are a valuable asset. I would also like to see us promote our

scholarships more. As a teacher, I know how hard it is to get in the schools to promote the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contests. I hope that in years to come, we can fi nd a way to be better recognized for these important scholarships so that students have the opportunity to go to college. I would also like to see us work on a program for students in the younger grades so that patriotism is instilled in them earlier.

my time, energies and monies to promote the established programs in our community. Volunteering within the VFW Auxiliary,

whether it be at the local, District or Department level, is easy to do and it can make a noticeable diff erence in the lives of others. Working with our members to achieve results within our organization is a rewarding experience – our members are an integral part of our organization and our mission, thus building a sustainable bond, creating loyalty and mutual respect, which leads our members to contribute time, expertise and funding which is critical to our continued success!
