Developing Digital Scholarship: Emerging practices in academic libraries

This new book, edited by Alison Mackenzie and Lindsey Martin, gives strategic insights drawn from librarians who are meeting the challenge of digital scholarship, utilising the latest technologies and creating new knowledge in partnership with researchers, scholars, colleagues and students. The impact of digital on libraries has

extended far beyond its transformation of content, to the development of services, the extension and enhancement of access to research and to teaching and learning systems. As a result, the fluidity of the digital environment can often be at odds with the more systematic approaches to development traditionally taken by academic libraries, which has also led to a new generation of roles and shifting responsibilities with staff training and development often playing ‘catch-up’. One of the key challenges to emerge

is how best to demonstrate expertise in digital scholarship, which draws on the specialist technical knowledge of the profession and maintains and grows its relevance for staff, students and researchers. Developing Digital Scholarship spans

a wide range of contrasting perspectives, contexts, insights and case studies, which explore the relationships between digital scholarship, contemporary academic libraries and professional practice. The editors said: ‘Our book demonstrates that there are opportunities to be bold, remodel, trial new approaches and reposition the library as a key partner in the process of digital scholarship.’ Alison Mackenzie is the Dean of

Learning Services at Edge Hill University. Alison has been an active contributor in the development of the profession, having held roles on the SCONUL Board, and as Chair of the performance Measurement and Quality Strategy group. She is currently a member of the Northern Collaboration steering group and is co- editor of this book. www.facetpublishing.co.uk/

SAGE Research Method Video

SAGE Publishing has launched a collection of streaming videos designed to help students and researchers learn and develop research skillsets and navigate the research process. Titled SAGE Research Method Video, the collection includes 484 videos on social science research methods and statistics. ‘Video is an incredibly

powerful tool for teaching topics like research design, data collection and statistical analysis, as they can often feel abstract and challenging for students,’ said Katie Metzler, head of methods innovation at SAGE Publishing. ‘The collection is full of engaging animations, step-by-step video tutorials, and videos showing, for example, real focus groups being conducted, giving students and researchers a fun and effective way to learn to do their own research.’ SAGE Research Methods

Video contains more than 125 hours of content including tutorials, expert interviews, case studies, mini-documentaries, focus groups, and more. The

collection also includes: l A 15-hour introductory statistics course;

Ingenta Open

Ingenta has launched Ingenta Open, a hosting platform solution and discovery portal designed exclusively for open access content. With an increasing amount of Open Access content being published, much of which is indexed across a variety of sites or stored away in institutional repositories, Ingenta Open is a new central hub and browsing service for researchers, students and the general public specifically seeking open access resources. The platform hosts

content from all scholarly disciplines and caters for multiple formats, including

whole books, chapters, monographs, single articles and entire journals. It will eventually provide access to millions of open access articles, whether they are hosted on the platform itself, or indexed via third party services such as DOAJ and OAPEN. Publishers who choose

to host their Open Access content on the platform will be able to tap into the Ingenta Connect network of 25,000 registered institutions, and millions of end users. Byron Russell, head of Ingenta Connect, said: ‘One of the main reasons behind the academic publishing community

migrating towards Open Access models was to make content more readily available, and free-of- charge, to users. ‘The problem is that

a great deal of these resources are hidden away in institutional siloes, or are poorly indexed online with minimal discoverability options. Our aim in creating Ingenta Open is to make open access really open – to offer users with a globally central access point for all open access content online, and to guarantee that publishers and authors get the visibility their research deserves.’ www.ingenta.com

l Four hours of SPSS training with professor and textbook author Andy Field;

l A three-hour presentation skills course;

l A two hour course on designing and doing surveys; and

l A one-hour course on planning research projects. The videos can be streamed to demonstrate research in action, assigned to students ahead of lectures to stimulate in-class discussions, and used to expose viewers to alternative perspectives or a range of subject experts. Developed in partnership with an international editorial advisory board, the collection also features short documentary films made in leading research centres around the world. www.uk.sagepub.com
