LASYS: LASERS IN ACTION
ACTION STATIONS FOR LASER USERS
More than 30 presentations are organised for this year’s Lasers in Action forum at the Lasys trade fair, taking place from 31 May to 2 June in Stuttgart, Germany. Here we preview the programme
L
aser Systems Europe magazine, along with the organisers of Lasys, Messe Stuttgart, and
the Laser Institute of America (LIA), have put together a comprehensive programme of talks discussing the latest laser technology, applications, and market developments. The Lasers in Action forum, to be held on all three days of the Lasys trade fair from 31 May to 2 June in Stuttgart, Germany, will offer more than 30 presentations, as well as an interactive panel discussion. The talks are free to attend
and will take place daily from 9.15 to 16.30 at stand 4A51. Laser users and decision- makers from industry will gain insights into how lasers can increase quality, efficiency and productivity in manufacturing. The seminar programme
will feature a panel discussion on current and future trends in laser materials processing, to be held on 1 June from 12.30 to 13.30. The panellists are: Dave MacLellan, executive secretary of the Association of Industrial Laser Users (AILU); Markus Rütering, sales and marketing

manager for Asia at Laserline; Klaus Kleine, director of product line management at Coherent; and Lars Penning, managing director of Next Scan Technology. Warren Clark, managing director of Europa Science, which publishes Laser Systems Europe, will moderate the discussion. On 2 June from 14.00 to
15.00 the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) will address the topic of future challenges for the photonics industry in Germany and Europe. ‘The research and innovation policy of Asian countries will focus more on the present domains of German and European photonics providers in the coming years,’ commented Gerhard Hein, president of the Laser and Laser Systems for Material Processing

Association, as well as the Photonics Forum at the VDMA. ‘We mainly see these challenges as a competition roadmap and as an incentive for considerations on how positions can be secured in key Asian markets or new business segments conquered. What is important here is the question of whether and how German and European companies can open up to cooperative ventures with Asian partners.’ Together with guest
speakers, initial thoughts on this area will be discussed. Daniela Bartscher-Herold, partner of the management consulting firm Euro Asia Consulting (EAC); Jürgen Valentin, chief technology officer of NanoFocus; and Dr Thomas Rettich, head of research coordination at Trumpf, will delivery keynote addresses during the session. Other experts from leading
companies and organisations will give presentations throughout the three days on topics ranging from laser microprocessing, scanning technologies, and laser welding, through to laser applications in mould and tool construction.

Five axis precession drilling system Dr Holger Schlüter, Scanlab
Ultrashort pulse (USP) lasers have enabled new applications in micromachining. Applications include drilling of fuel injector nozzles, micromachining of parts in the watch and medical device industry, as well as spinnerets for textile manufacturing. In order to process the material in these new applications novel beam deviation systems have to be developed. Scanlab presents a five axis precession drilling system where the beam can be inclined during the drilling process. Te system creates holes with a high aspect ratio and straight walls by precession of the laser beam. A rotation frequency of 500Hz can be achieved with a field of 5mm diameter for marking and 2.5mm for precision drilling. Te beam can be inclined up to ±7.5°. Dr Schlüter will show results that were achieved with the precession scanner system.
