Future Photonics Hub industry day promotes photonics manufacturing
E
ngaging industry in the development of new photonics manufacturing processes for lower-cost, higher-
performing integrated sensors, lasers and sub-systems was the theme of the Future Photonics hub inaugural industry day, held at the University of Southampton on 13 September.
The Future Photonics Hub is one of two £10 million research centres funded by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council that will transform the UK’s manufacturing industries. Although the UK’s photonics industry generates revenues of £10 billion a year, according to EPSRC, it enables £600 billion worth of manufacturing output. Partnered with the National III-V Centre at the University of Sheffield, the aim of the Future Photonics Hub is to improve the ability to manufacture and integrate photonics, leading to low-cost production and
accelerating the wider adoption of photonics technology.
The Hub focuses on integrating photonics in four critical technology areas: high performance silica optical fibres; light generation and delivery; silicon photonics; and large-scale manufacture of metamaterials and 2D materials.
‘ Some 150
Some 150 people attended the industry event, from sectors such as manufacturing, aerospace, defence, advanced materials, electronics, telecoms and healthcare. The keynote speech was from renowned entrepreneur, Dr Andrew Rickman, OBE CEO and chairman of Rockley Photonics, a company focused on commercialising silicon photonics technology. He discussed how Rockley Photonics collaborates with the hub in research in manufacturing related to the company’s commercial targets, in

terms of their device and system product developments. Ongoing work includes developing SiP modulators, wafer scale testing, and thermally tolerant multiplexers and demultiplexers for commercialisation by Rockley Photonics. The company assists in making prototype designs manufacturable, and ensures designs meet product specifications with sufficient margins in the presence of process variations and under increasing
levels of integration One of the highlights of the Hub’s industry
day was the announcement of the new Innovation Fund, designed to stimulate engagement with industry as project partners demonstrate a pathway to manufacturing and exploitation. Up to £250,000 in funding is available for projects, and the deadline for proposals is 7 November.
