UK Construction Week 2017 – Constru
Construction Week UK is the largest built environment event that takes up four halls at the NEC and covers so many aspects of building that it is simply mind boggling. The advice to plan your day carefully is good – but I challenge any visitor not to be distracted occasionally - with the result that your planning might be somewhat thrown off course. ToolBusiness and Hire naturally focuses on the tool-centred part of the
exhibition and a number of well-known brands were represented. Metabo UK had an impressive stand showing a range of cordless tools to a market that included company buyers and influencers rather than end users. It is amazing what live demos can achieve because some of the interested parties seemed quite astonished at some of the capabilities of cordless tools. Festool UK also had a large stand displaying its premium quality cordless and
cordless tools. Again, some visitors seemed amazed at the technology on display, and begged the question that perhaps there is always room for building professionals involved in design and project management to be more aware of the nuts and bolts of actually doing the work. So they can then appreciate the skills required, as well as understanding some of the incredible tools needed to achieve the end result.
Fischer Fixings UK had a very modern stand and a lively PR and marketing
team whose aim is to raise the profile of fischer in this country. With a arrange of top class and award winning fixing products in its portfolio, the show was an ideal chance to meet and inform construction professionals from many disciplines about fischer fixings. There was also a packed programme of talks, lectures and forum discussions
over all three days about many aspects of the building industry. The subjects were very wide ranging and thought provoking. For example, the
future use of drones for surveying and assessment all the way to what was clearly a topic of the moment. Entitled ‘Building Homes for Future Generations, or just a quick fix?’ Chaired by the BBC’s Steph McGovern and with Kevin McCloud and Mark
Jones from the NHBC included in the panel I am sure there was much to discuss – and possibly even a spark or two of lively disagreement. One panel that created a very lively discussion was entitled ‘Making Buildings
Safe’. This was chaired by TV Architect and expert George Clarke with four-man panel Dennis Davis (Fire Sector Federation), Deon Lombard (architect) Steven Thompson (RICS Associate Director) and Jonathan Herrick (Business Safety and
