e Unto the Ricoh Arena National Abrasives has
launched several new products recently. I have tried the multi-purpose sanders and found them to be just that. Limited only by the users’ imagination. Next on the blocks is the Mudgun – reviewed in this edition. A simple way of speeding up the finishing of plasterboard joints by applying the premixed “mud” with a gun and smoothing it over to produce a good looking joint without the hassle of filler mixing or trowels. I also had a fascinating
discussion with Tite-Fix about screws and fastenings – more to come on this one. But one thing is clear - choosing the right screws for the right job is even more important now that we have the choice – and Tite- Fix is doing its best to ensure that we have the right screws for the right job. Broadfix had the red carpet out – the red carpet
protection film so beloved by painters and decorators. The addition to this widely used product is a date box printed onto it so that users can ensure that they take it up in time. Just like masking tape – it is not advisable to leave it on too long because the adhesive starts to attach to things it shouldn’t! I also had a good look at the Patlock system for locking
patio doors. It is deliberately highly visible to deter thieves and is a simple and effective way to get greater security at home. After the BBC’s Dragons failed to offer any investment, the Patlock system won best new product at the Totally Tools show. Sometimes the Dragons miss the point, and I do think they have done so in this case. Also in the innovation zone were the Recoil Kneepads.
Literally made with springs under the knees for that extra comfort and bounce, I tried them on. I have a continuing quest to find a pair of kneepads that actually stay on my knees and these kneepads, with their stretch straps and hook and loops fastenings, did during the short trial I had with them. Also nearby was the Cladman from SITEBUDDYZ.
The Cladman is a simple and effective way of lining up cladding to the sides of buildings. It is very easy to use and flexible enough to take into account all sizes of cladding. It also ensures that the cladding is accurately lined up for that perfect look so beloved by aficionados of grand (or small) designs.
Loft ladders have come a long way
from the dangerous things they used to be. Lyte Ladders’ new loft ladder has been sourced in Europe so it is well made, strong, safe and compact. Probably more to the point, a competent DIYer could fit it in a couple of hours. And it won’t cost a fortune either. It was good to see the Dripless
caulking guns back in town. I tested these tough guns a couple of years ago and now they are my tool of choice. They are genuinely dripless, have a couple of handy extras, like the unblocking needle attached and they are tough as old boots. Totally Tools is due to Return to the Ricoh Arena in June 2018.
