Executive Hire Show 2017

With over 160 exhibitors, genuine show deals with networking and marketing opportunities aplenty, the annual Executive Hire Show at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry seems to be a must for hire companies and related industries. The ‘buzz’ of business definitely hangs in the hall. Visitors need to be

purposeful to see everything they need to see because the exhibition covers so much. But from the many huddles of discussions taking place it was clear that visitors took advantage of the opportunities. For exhibitors, the opportunity to meet customers face to face is important too and sometimes simple product demos can be all that is needed to get a significant order. From discussions I had with various exhibitors and visitors, the Brexit question

is being dealt with as another bump in the road that needs to be dealt with as and when difficulties or opportunities arise. A typically pragmatic British response. Another big aspect of

the EHS is the Innovation Trail. From 36 eligible entries received for this year’s Innovation Trail, ten Finalists were selected by the judging panel of independent hirers. Entries must have been launched since the 2016 Show and be commercially available, rather than prototypes, and they were assessed in terms of how they addressed key industry issues like Health & Safety and their worthiness of inclusion in any hire fleet. Each Finalist was highlighted by a large Innovation Trail floor tile beside the relevant supplier’s stand, so you couldn’t miss them. Several of the

innovations caught my eye. MHM Plant’s 10kVA Diesel generator will reduce noise, fuel consumption and

emissions by 25 or 50% over a typical hire period according to the company. It does this by adopting an economical start/stop mode that operates according to demand on the generator. We obviously need more of this technology, so all power to them. The Securi-Cabin Smart Pick mobile welfare cabin is designed to be towed by

a standard 4x4 vehicle. Once on site, the individual steering system can be used to place the cabin exactly where needed even in restricted spaces. With a separate

extendable site office area and a power management system to minimise fuel consumption and emissions, it is right up to date. Morris Site Machinery had rows of rubber ducks in a splash-proof booth to

demonstrate its Innovation Trail contender – the Makinex Hose 2 Go. Simply filled by attaching a hose from a tap, the internal bladder empties like a balloon losing air, providing enough water pressure for jobs like dust suppression and simple cleaning. Two handles top and side enable the Hose 2 Go to be easily carried to where it is needed. Hire Supply’s innovation offer is the portable Exin EX90L rechargeable LED

work light. This light is designated as the only self-contained light designed for use where inflammable gas and combustible dust may be present. With a run time of up to twelve hours depending on settings it will last a working day and more before needing a recharger. In the end, the Atlas Copco RTEX pneumatic breaker was chosen by the

judges as the winner. This design consumes air from the compressor only on the piston return stroke allowing the piston to be longer, thus more powerful, as well as reducing vibration to the user. With less air being used, more machines can be connected to the compressor, or a smaller compressor can be used. Savings all round! The Makinex Hose 2 Go was the runner up, adding another gong to Morris

Site Machinery’s Awards cabinet. Having a whole group of hirers and related industry professionals in one place

is a classic way of doing some education and training too, and Hire Association Europe (HAE) used the opportunity to deliver a series of workshops and presentations on its SafeHire Initiative. SafeHire is designed to raise standards in the hire industry by helping business to improve Health and Safety procedures and customer service levels. The SafeHire initiative has been developed in conjunction with the BSI, HSE and CHAS, and all HAE members are expected to reach SafeHire standards by 1st
