As we do this, we realize that this is a very different world than the one we encountered as children and teens. With all the electronic gadgets that entice our youngsters, how can we help them fi nd their way to creativity,

unstructured play and the fun of using imagination as a springboard to their own passions and talents? The article Yay for Play (p.22) addresses this very question. Seeing parents sketch, sew, build, journal or read with pleasure may spark children to do their own thing. Taking a weekly trip to parks, museums and other nearby places will bring opportunities to question and grow. Making up stories— the sillier the better—can be a family in-house adventure. Encourage children also to fi nd ways in their own community
to “give back” and foster the “pay it forward” mindset. It’s amazing the ways young people have found to make positive changes close to home and to give rather than to receive. Our feature Growing Up Empowered (p.16) has many suggestions for us as adults to equip the next generation for service and spur feelings of worth. Help them to dream Big!
