Shows buoyed by strong attendance - are things looking up? W

ith the major tackle and gun shows now over it’s time to reflect on how they went and in the main it’s fair to say that they were very successful for some, if not all exhibitors. I’ll start with the British Shooting Show – where John Allison not only delivered a spectacular looking event but also ensured a quality audience attended. There were fears among many that after last year’s car parking furore this show might struggle but that certainly wasn’t the case. Free parking was back and the audience was a quality one.

Of the dozens of exhibitors I’ve spoken to the feedback was almost totally positive – any negatives I’ll address towards the end of this... Moving on to The Big One – the flagship angling event in a hectic show calendar. Again a large audience was delivered – thanks to Bauer’s extensive reach and marketing. Speaking to exhibitors there was a massive slant towards a carp audience – which was good if you were a carp-based company – and not quite as good if you were match-based. What can be done about this in the future is down to Bauer’s marketing prowess but I’m sure they have everything in hand. So what’s the elephant in the room, I hear you ask? It’s the untidiness of the retail element. And I mean that in no disrespect to dealers attending

So what’s

the elephant in the room, I hear you ask? It’s the untidiness of the retail element. And I mean that in no disrespect to dealers attending any of these shows – you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do and every penny counts.

any of these shows – you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do and every penny counts. Visitors want bargains, I get that. But when the brands you are supporting have spent literally tens of thousands of pounds to put on a professional display it really does stick in their craw when next door to them is a bunch of trestle tables resembling a car boot sale. I don’t profess to know the answer to tidying up the retail element at these events. Well maybe I do know exactly how to do it, as I did it at the Go Fishing Show in the early 2000s, I’m just not sure the organisers have got the appetite for it. One thing is for sure though – tidy up the retail element and The Big One and the British Shooting Show will be next level!

One final word about the Go Fishing Show – Dave Greenland of Predator Tackle – what a show you put on! Your Lure Live event within an event really has been a wake-up call to the British tackle scene – lure fishing has arrived and it’s only going to go from strength to strength! Well done on that gamble, and may it continue to pay dividends.
