It’s Half Term! CIWW
Make waves at CIWW Keep your boisterous brood entertained this half term with adrenaline-boosting activities at Cardiff International White Water (CIWW). Located a stone’s throw away from the city centre with free, on-site parking, the facility offers exhilarating sessions for all ages and abilities. Suitable for kids and big kids alike, Family Rafting is the perfect way to dip your toes into the thrills and spills of the white water course. The level and speed of the water are lowered, enabling children as young as six to take part. With up to six people in a raft, riding the rapids is guaranteed to inject some fun into your family time. Ideal for complete beginners, as well as board sport enthusiasts, bodyboarding is available all year round at CIWW, even when the weather outside is off-putting. The indoor simulated surf machine features a double lane design, so that family and friends can put their newfound skills to the test together. Those who aren’t fans of water can get their kicks from the Air Trail high rope, steel and timber course, which towers above the white water. Both children and adults love tackling the challenge of the Burma Bridge, Monkey Swing, Barrel Crawl and Zip Wire obstacles. Sessions cost from £10 to £35 per person; age and height restrictions apply. To book, call 029 2082 9970, or visit

Chapter Arts
Films with strong juvenile leads, inspiring coming of age stories and battles against all odds take centre stage on the big screen at Chapter this February. From a young boy coping with his mother’s terminal cancer to a 10 year-old Ugandan girl whose life is changed forever when she is introduced to the game of chess – the silver screen is packed this month with powerful stories about the youngest members of our society. A Monster Calls (12A) starring Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones and Lewis MacDougall tells the story of Conor, a young boy failing to cope with the fact that his mother is dying of cancer. Bullied at school and at home by his imperious grandmother, he relies on his imagination to get through each day, sketching in his notepad, and conjuring a tree-shaped monster to confess his inner most fears to. Ancient wild and relentless, the monster guides him on a journey of courage and faith. In Lion (PG), five-year-old Saroo gets lost on a train travelling thousands of miles across India, away from home and family. Stranded alone, he is adopted by an Australian couple. 25 years later, armed with only a handful of memories and using new technology he sets out to find his lost family. Based on the true story of the Brierley family and starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara and Nicole Kidman this is an illuminating look at the power of memory which is also up for 5 BAFTA Awards this season. Living in the slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle for 10-year-old Phiona and her family in the film Queen of Katwa (PG). Her world changes one day when she meets a missionary who teaches children how to play chess. Phiona becomes fascinated with the game and soon becomes a top player under her tutor’s guidance. Her success in local competitions and tournaments opens the door to a bright future and a golden chance to escape from a life of poverty. Swim Champs
Swim Champs is the only swim school in Wales run by two time Olympic Medalist David Davies. David also won medals at the Commonwealth Games, World and European Championships before retiring from his career as a professional athlete. Swim Champs offers weekly group lessons for swimmers aged 3 years plus, including parent and child water confidence classes, Learn to Swim, private 1:1 lessons for everyone including nervous beginners through to adult ironmen/triathletes/club swimmers. We pride ourselves on the high quality of all our swimming lessons. All delivered by ASA qualified teachers. The main emphasis of all the lessons is to get children hooked on swimming by ensuring all lessons are fun and children are learning and developing life skills. If you can’t get to our regular lessons through the year then look no further. Our February Half Term Intensive Crash Courses (running from February 20th to 24th) are just the thing to get your little ones moving competently in the water. As frequency is the key for many children to progress through the stages of learning, these lessons offer an ideal solution to continuing and improving your child’s swimming routine whilst our weekly lessons are suspended. Certificates will be available to everyone who attends, and entry into the next block of lessons can be based on their current level after the crash course. The next intake for weekly lessons takes place week commencing 19th February for a 6 week course (they follow school terms). To get your budding Olympians off to a flying start get in touch today.
