CRAFTBUTCHER l FEBRUARY 2017

9

6 - 10 March 2017

THIS year's event will celebrate apprenticeships, across all industries, and all levels, with the theme ‘ladder of opportunity’. In its 10th anniversary year,

the week will give everyone involved in the apprenticeship community the perfect chance to celebrate individual stories of career progression over the last decade from traineeships through to higher and Degree apprenticeships During National

Apprenticeship Week, employers and apprentices from across England will come together to demonstrate the many benefits that apprenticeships can bring. The week will also aim to encourage more employers to take on apprentices and individuals to choose an apprenticeship as a ladder of opportunity to a great career. Sue Husband, director of the National Apprenticeship

Service said: "National Apprenticeship

Week is a fantastic opportunity for us to celebrate the many benefits of apprenticeships. Year-on-year I am overwhelmed by how many organisations get behind the week and show their support with the huge amount of events and activities that take place across the country. I have no doubt that this, our 10th Anniversary, will be our biggest and best week yet."

provider is delivering butchery apprenticeships in the South East.

How the Plumpton Butchery College developed

EAST SUSSEX Apprenticeships Limited have now become part of Plumpton College’s, fast developing food division and the team led by Tony Meredith are now employed by the college to deliver butchery courses including Trailblazer Butcher and Advanced Butcher apprenticeships. Plumpton College can

now provide training and apprenticeships in London and the Southeast. Plumpton, situated near Lewes and just a few miles from Brighton aims to create a centre for training butchery and hold events enabling the meat industry in the southeast to network, develop and prosper as a sector. Te first of these events,

held at Plumpton last autumn, was a Butchery Showcase where retailers, wholesalers, trade organisations, farmers, ingredient suppliers and apprentices enjoyed the great atmosphere and networked with a glass of wine and some cheese produced by the college’s food division. Te new Trailblazer apprenticeships being

delivered by Plumpton sees a return to the traditional skills required from the ‘front line’ butcher. Learners on the new level 2 apprenticeship begin by completing units in food safety, health and safety and knife skills and then for a further 12 months learn all aspects of modern butchery before a final assessment. At Plumpton, apprentices will also visit an abattoir, farms, bench mark businesses and a livestock market. Te Advanced butcher

standard takes the food safety and health and safety qualifications to a level 3 standard before moving through specified units and finishing with a project of the learner’s choice. Tony said “Despite recent criticism of some Trailblazer

apprenticeships, butchery trailblazer stands apart as a serious progression in butchery training that will help raise the profile of the butchery trade and the skills involved”. Tony added “Developed

jointly by employers and trade organisations, butchery Trailblazer is a well thought out apprenticeship with a good balance of understanding, skills and behaviour standards that delivers relevant qualifications in food hygiene and health and safety to the benefit of both employers and employees”.
