4 CRAFTBUTCHER l FEBRUARY 2017 DEMOCRACY WORKS!

THE National Federation of Meat and Food Traders (NFMFT) is a democratic organisation that has operated for almost 130 years representing and supporting its members. Prior to 1974 and ‘Direct’

membership, local meat trade associations collected subscriptions and paid an affiliation fee to the Federation to represent their members on national issues. Each association was within the boundary of an Area Council which would nominate members to represent the area on the Federation's board known as the Executive Council. At the time of the

Federation's Centenary in 1988, the Executive Council had 28 members representing 15 area councils and together with the Pork and Bacon Section, with

12 members, met six times a year. With closure of the Pork and Bacon section and reducing numbers of local associations and area councils, nowadays the Executive Council has 12 members representing six areas. Like all successful

organisations, the Federation’s function and structure has evolved to accommodate change and remains a democratic institution with a board of directors elected by its members Te tie with area councils

and local associations, although limited, continues to exist as does the democratic process. Executive members are still nominated by area association and council secretaries or individual members to represent the region. Tese days, the Executive
