‘Wheel Women’ Boost for female cyclists

The offi cial launch of ‘Wheel Women’ by Sport Cardiff will open new opportunities for women to enjoy cycling, gain confi dence and increase fi tness.

The initiative, which draws on British Cycling’s

national

Breeze network, aims to build a “female cycling community” in the Cardiff area with regular rides for beginners and those with more experience, with social events and cycle maintenance classes. More than 100 women have already joined eight rides organised since the beginning of the year. More rides are planned between April and June. The offi cial launch took place at The

Bike

Shed in Tongwynlais, which recently opened a £100,000 department for women cyclists at its 2,000 square foot showroom in the village. The Bike Shed, with headquarters at Pontcanna, has formed a partnership with Sport

Cardiff and Welsh Cycling.

Sport Cardiff, part of Cardiff Metropolitan University, is responsible for sports development in the city.

Its Women and

Girls Sports Co-ordinator, Fay Benningwood. said: “We want to engage with women in the Cardiff area to create a female cycling community, rather than a club,

The Fencing Doctor

providing a welcoming social opportunity, a chance to gain confi dence and fi tness. All rides are accompanied by trained leaders and cater for beginners and

intermediates. “Our target is to arrange three rides a month, at weekends and mid-week, using mostly quiet routes and cycle trails, and maybe the chance to push

yourself a bit on a cycle track.”

The Bike Shed’s John Higgins said: “We are delighted to play host and

to be partnering

Sport Cardiff and Welsh Cycling in this great new initiative of Wheel Women.”
