The surprising truth about the food on our plates!

Celebrated food writer Felicity Cloake has done some serious number crunching to reveal a surprising snapshot of food facts and fi gures.

What is Britain’s bestselling fi sh? Salmon. It knocked tuna off the top spot in 2015. Despite the diverse populations found in the waters around our islands, an estimated 75 per cent of British fi sh and seafood sales is made up of just fi ve species: salmon, cod, tuna, warm water prawns and haddock.

Which country eats the most cheese?

France. No surprises here. Each French person puts away 26.8kg a year. More surprisingly, perhaps the UK comes a lowly 28th between Slovakia and Chile, with an average intake of just 12.1kg per person. The average price of a litre of British milk in the chiller cabinets is 45 pence. Of that, how much of that do you think goes to the farmer? 5 pence! The ‘farm gate’ price (the average price paid to UK producers for all milk sold to dairies) for a litre of milk is currently 27p yet it costs

farmers an average of 29 pence to produce each litre of milk in the fi rst place. More than 1000 dairy farms have closed since 2013 because of this challenging economic climate. What percentage of the food we eat is produced in the UK? 61 per cent. Although this has fallen from a high of 75 per cent in the 1980’s. There are concerns our self-suffi ciency will continue to fall, thanks to changing weather patterns and global pressures. What year did the fi rst Indian restaurant open in Britain? 1810! Sheikh Din Muhammad of Bihar opened the Hindoostane Coffee House in London’s Marylebone. Sadly it didnt’t last long and it was another half century before anyone dared to have another go. There are now about 12 000 Indian restaurants in the UK. What percentage of the average annual UK household expenditure goes on food? 11 per cent. That’s half the amount we spent in 1970 while in 1940 a third of our income went on food. The falling price of food is due to increased retail competition, effi cient

production methods and better logistics.

When you buy a £4.99 bottle of wine how much of that price is made up of wine after tax, packaging, transport and the importer and retailer’s margins have been taken into account? 39 pence! Which is why it is worth shelling out a little bit more if you can. According to wine expert Fiona Beckett of website matching food and wine.com bottles priced between £6.99 and £9.99 offer the best value. What proportion of people in the UK don’t eat meat? 3.25 per cent. And one per cent avoid all animal products making veganism one of the fast growing lifestyle movements in Britain. With 42 per cent of these vegans aged between 15 and 34 this looks like a trend we’ll be seeing more of in the future. Extract from delicious magazine.
