NEW HOMES • NEW DEVELOPMENTS Homebuilder sponsors Guide Dog puppy

DAVID Wilson Homes is continuing its long association with Guide Dogs by sponsoring a puppy in South Wales. Te donation by the homebuilder will support the training of a puppy from the beginning of its journey towards becoming a fully-fledged guide dog. Staff at David Wilson Homes in South Wales found out more about

the training programme following a visit by guide dog Nelson and training puppy Ena recently. “Our puppy

is due to

be born in the next few months so the visit was a great opportunity for staff here to find out more about the incredible skills of guide dogs and gave everyone an insight what our puppy will be doing to help its owner once fully trained,’’ said David

Wilson Homes sales director Richard Lawson. Nelson visited with his owner Hannah Farron while Ena was with puppy walker Peter Tomas. Te homebuilder has a strong affiliation with the Guide Dogs having first sponsored a puppy more than 20 years ago. Richard said: “Our symbol is a Golden Retriever so we have always felt a very strong connection with

surveyor shortlisted Catherine Evans, who works for Cardiff- based partnership housing developer Lovell and lives near Pontypridd, has been named a finalist in the European Women in Construction and Engineering (WICE) Awards 2017.

Senior estimator Catherine is in the running for the title of Best Woman Quantity Surveyor in the awards which honour outstanding women working in the industry. The winners will be announced at the awards dinner in London on 24 May.

Lovell regional managing director Kate Rees, who nominated Catherine, says: “Catherine’s exceptional commercial skills and technical expertise have been instrumental in building the Lovell business over the past 17 years, helping us become one of the region’s foremost partnership housing developers. She is a key member of our team and an inspiring role model for anyone hoping to work in the industry. I couldn’t be more pleased that the WICE Awards judges have selected her as a finalist. During her 28- year career, Catherine has also displayed tremendous personal resilience, starting her training in an era when women on construction sites were a rarity, overcoming serious illness to continue in her profession and combining a demanding job with family life as a single parent. “At a time of construction skills shortages, women remain under-represented in our industry as a whole, so there’s real pressure on us all to ensure we make the most of

this particular talent pool. Lovell has a range of initiatives under way to attract more women into the sector, including highlighting the success of high-achieving professionals such as Catherine. She is a fantastic example to girls and young women considering a construction career.” Catherine originally turned her back on a career in hairdressing to join the construction business, starting as a trainee surveyor with a local construction firm in 1989. Having successfully dealt with the challenges involved in frequently being the only woman on site (and the lone female student on her BSc course in Quantity Surveying), she rose swiftly through the ranks at Amec to become a senior quantity surveyor. During her early career, she worked on major new-build schemes, including the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Cardiff Motor Point Arena and the Cardiff International Hotel, before joining Lovell in 2000. As regional buyer with Lovell, she led a six-strong buying and administrative team responsible for procuring all materials and services. After having her second child, Catherine had to take a further period of absence because of cancer, returning in 2005 as

senior estimator. She has

contributed to some of Lovell’s most successful projects, including the award- winning housing development on the Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital site. To find out about a career with Lovell visit
