improve but also on understanding the needs and beliefs of others. “We found this had a positive impact on our operative staff, who work at close quarters as a team and regularly travel away from home together,” says Andy Hawtin. The example used in GB Liners’ entry to demonstrate added
value drew the judges’ approval. “Often, clients have small volumes to move, and it clearly is not cost effective to pay for a truck to travel to, say, Switzerland with only a few items on board,” Andy Hawtin explains. “Previously, these moves would be quoted on the normal shared-load basis, but clients would often have to wait a number of weeks for their belongings to arrive. “In order to better service this particular route, we committed
to a vehicle leaving our London office every Monday, without fail and whether fully loaded or not, where small loads can be booked at short notice. At our hub warehouse on the German/Swiss border, consignments are carefully separated. Customs are then cleared, and the goods delivered locally, normally on a Thursday and Friday. The process works in reverse for moves to the UK. “Clients receive their goods almost immediately, and at a fraction
of the cost. This is particularly popular with the advent of lump- sum policies, where budget controls are tight and individuals often have to fund a move themselves in the first instance, claiming back at a later date.” Judging by the glowing testimonials, this approach is working.
“A real personal touch at every level, where nothing is too much trouble,” wrote one FTSE 500 company’s mobility director. An
assignee relocating from Switzerland to London enthused, “In a testing set of circumstances, you delivered a fantastic service all round.” GB Liners has seen many changes and challenges during its
more than 20 years in the corporate relocation and international assignment market. In a crowded arena, agility and providing value for money are key to staying one step ahead of the competition, so it has no intention of resting on its laurels. Says Andy Hawtin, “Our place in the relocation food chain
dictates that we will continue to be tasked with doing more for less, so the future will be challenging. However, we are excited by the imminent launch of two new websites showcasing some online and added-value tools available to both our corporate and private clients. “Later this year and into 2017, we hope to expand our hub services
to cater for other destinations, and will focus on the continued development of our overseas partners, who are equally important to our success.” Describing theRe:locateAwards win as “a great morale booster”,
Andy Hawtin says, “This is the first time GB Liners has entered for an award such as this, and we are over the moon to have been recognised by the judges. Obviously, it is a great piece of publicity for us and extremely useful to the sales teams, but a win like this perhaps has an even greater effect internally, and really helps every employee at GB Liners to feel their efforts are worth something.”
