Treasures of the Smith

Exhibition 27 June – 4 Oct 2015 T

he exhibition opens for the summer at the Stirling Smith when Charles,

Lord Bruce, unveils the newest treasure – a four foot maquete of his ancestor the King of Scots in batle, by Charles d’Orville Pilkington Jackson, created during the delivery of the great iconic statue of Bruce at Bannockburn.

The Stirling Smith has been collecting for 140 years. Reflecting on the exhibition Colin O’Brien, Chairman of the Smith Trustees said:

The Smith contains all of the things which make Stirling,, as distinct from every other Scotish burgh – the famous Stirling Jug or Scots pint, a national measure instituted by Act of Parliament 1457, the great banner of the Incorporation of Tailors. Stirling’s wealth still rests on the legacy of Robert Spital, Tailor to King James IV in Stirling. Spital Street has been a principal Stirling Street since time immemorial.

Featured in the exhibition will be paintings by “Glasgow Boys” William Kennedy, James Paterson and William York MacGregor. Two works are Stirling paintings and are shortly to go on a loan to Drents Museum in the Netherlands for a major Glasgow Boys exhibition. A self portrait of Stirling resident Glasgow Boy Steven Campbell (1953 - 2007) is also in the exhibition.

Since the start of landscape painting,

Stirling has been on every artists ‘to do’ list, and the works on show includes a View of Stirling Castle by Irish artist Thomas Walmsley (1763-1806), a view of the Stirling in 1854 by Henry Duguid (1805-1860) and a superb Stirling landscape by English artist James Warwick Smith.

Stirling as a centre for international interests is shown by the great salon painting ‘The Mussel Beds of Villerville’ by Maurice Poirson (1864-1882) which won a silver medal in Paris in 1875, an eighteenth century suit of Samurai armour from Japan, and an early nineteenth century Buddha with a Sutra box for sacred writings.
