Even into the early 20th century with the sharecropper system the landed elite were fighting to legalise serfdom. The Pilgrims came to the United States for what they called religious freedom, which is identical to the freedoms the Republican party craves today. But, what is meant by freedom in this sense isn’t the right to practice one’s religion without being interfered with but the right to oppress those who refuse to bow before the chosen altar of the powerful. By “religious freedom” republicans mean the desire to oppress LGBT folks, muslims, and other minority groups.
In America, as in Britain, ordinary people have grown tired of scandals, alleged cover-ups and injustices along with the general under-regulation and over privatisation policies of the old guard politicians. There is popular demand for an end to the stupidity of Austerity. In the last UK election Labour didn’t give the public anything worth voting for. Blairism lost Labour the ballot yet people like Chuka Umunna argue
the reason the party didn’t win was is because it wasn’t Blairite enough.
Corbyn and Sanders could help save the nominally leſt wing parties of America and the UK from themselves. In both countries there are the missing millions who simply don’t turn out to vote.

In the US, particularly in the south, much of the working class simply doesn’t vote, although in some cases it’s because they can’t rather than won’t.
