“As we evolve as a society things like race and sexuality are no longer an issue. The shackles are being removed,” said Richie Martin of Glasgow salon Rebel Rebel.

“Whereas guys were more introvert, where male grooming is concerned, they are becoming more open. A lot of men used to think it wasn’t macho to be into male grooming but fi nally they are starting to break the boundaries and take care of their appearance.”

Many men are get ing their hair done more frequently than they used to. They are spending more money on products such as hairspray and gels, and are more likely to get colouring done.

Richie, who worked behind the scenes at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and styled artists at music festivals across the UK., is one of a new breed of barbers who are changing the face of the industry.

The 25-year-old from Bishopbriggs recently made the cut as one of the Men’s Hairdressing Federation’s four Best Young Barbers in Europe. He was the only Scot ish contender. Richie now showcases his hairstyling talents on stages across the UK with a rock star persona to boot.

T e days of a gentleman going to the barber for a short back and sides, and “something for the weekend”, are long gone.

Hundreds of fans watch Richie and the group known as the Young Feds create inspirational hairstyles that pioneer the latest fashions.

“It is the mob mentality. If your friends started to wear skinny jeans and converse shoes, you would too. We ritualise it and people follow. For example, we are in the era of the beard. Six years ago in Glasgow you were seen as a ‘scrubby’ if you had a beard. Now you are at the height of fashion and appear like an Adonis”, said Richie.

Society’s acceptance and understanding of male grooming has enabled men to enjoy what women have been experiencing for years. Men can now shamelessly follow fashion trends and express themselves.
