Massacre of 1770, in which British troops killed fi ve Americans and wounded six others during a street demonstration, occurred a full six years before the ultimate Declaration of Independence. The Boston Tea Party didn’t take place until 1773.


Across the 13 colonies revolutionary activity predated the desire for independence by decades. The original goal of groups like the Sons of Liberty and the Regulators in the 1760s was to protect the rights of Americans as British subjects. The War of Regulation, and the events that followed were all intended only to force British authorities to recognise the rights of Americans as British subjects. The same was true in India and South Africa, with Gandhi’s movement originally calling for “One King, One Law.”


As the British State refused to budge on surrendering any power acquired by London British citizens were leſt with no choice but rebellion.


The British state has not changed. In the past century it has moved from a position as the world’s global unquestioned superpower to a misgoverned former power in decline. Its once-great navy is now building aircraſt carriers that have no aircraſt . In the face of rising conventional threats such as DAESH, the extremest terrorist group formerly known as ISIS, it is currently fi ghting to save a weapons programme so outdated that it could not possibly be used. Its thinking will forever be backwards.


We Americans are insane but we’re not quite insane enough to stick to a course of decline for an entire century. No mat er how bad gridlock in Washington gets we always manage to at least stumble our way forwards even if it is occasionally by accident.


By passing the bigoted and homophobic Defense of Marriage Act, as well as similar anti-LGBT laws in US States, American Conservatives guaranteed the laws would be struck down in the courts and thereby making marriage equality a legal fact. The bigots accidentally legalised marriage equality by trying to fi ght it.
