In Focus Risk

2008 despite World War Two and all the other troubles that have happened since. If there had not been trillions being borrowed at all levels, where would we be now? Probably a lot poorer overall and much less healthy too – what if the pharmaceutical companies did not borrow to invest in new drugs? Would you and me still be here talking to each other?

Payer: Perhaps not, but it also takes a lot of money that governments and large companies borrow, to invest in terrible weapons which they may never use or, worse still, end up in completely destroying cities where several millions live. Now, who is going to pick up the bill for that, or, is it back to borrowing again to try and make good the harm that borrowing brought about in the first place? Debtor: You might have a point there, although I think we are both engaging in a bit of ‘cherry-picking’. Remember, there are many people who use their credit cards to donate to causes for victims of war and major disasters, even though lots of these card holders are in considerable debt themselves. It does not take much brain power to work out what would would happen to all these victims if life-saving funding was not readily available at the end of a keyboard or telephone.

Payer: It seems we are now resorting to ‘shroud-waving’ to prove our case, and that it is about time to call a truce by way of a quick drink. It is my turn to pay, but I will have to stop at that hole in the wall, where my branch of my bank used to be, as I am totally out of cash, even coins. But, damn, I have just remembered that they have closed down that bank's cash dispenser too, and, I have just stupidly realised, I have already reached my bank’s debit-card limit. And, of course, nobody wants to know about cheques ever again. Debtor: Ha, that shows cash is on the way out, and not before time. Fortunately, that posh pub across the road will accept credit cards, so I will use mine – oops, I am still having some trouble in accessing my account, supposedly because of computer error or hacking that my bank will not admit to, even though I have start having nasty letters about unpaid bills, which, of

course, is not my fault. So, it looks like a rain-check will be in order. My apologies.

Payer: Never mind, there are problems over credit arrangements as well as with cash, which is something we can both agree on. Debtor: I will drink to that next time we meet, assuming one of us has got the means to pay, even if the pounds in our pockets or somewhere online have fallen a lot further. Cheers! CCR
