CaseStudy

The Victoria Hotel in Sidmouth promises guests: “from the moment you step through the original carriage portico, you will be surrounded by warmth and refi nement.” Where the exquisite décor and four-star service provides the refi nement, a new A-rated effi cient boiler from Potterton Commercial is providing the warmth. With such a pledge to live up to, this year, the hotel had to act fast to replace its outdated and ineffi cient heating system with a new Potterton Commercial Sirius boiler. The hotel had some key requirements for its new heating system. It required a boiler that fi tted within the limited footprint of the existing plant room on the ground fl oor. There also had to be some form of back-up in case of a heating system failure. Marc Coombes of Sidmarc, who has worked with the hotel group for two decades, was brought in to survey the property. After

conducting a thorough analysis of the building, he concluded: “The hotel needs 300kW of energy to operate effi ciently. With this in mind the options were that we could have three smaller boilers, or go for the latest dual burner technology that could replace three existing boilers with one to save space, without compromising on performance, energy effi ciency or redundancy.” The Sirius FS 400kW was perfect for the Victoria Hotel due to Its leading modulation ratio; variable heating requirements, to optimise energy effi ciency and running costs; being equipped with a weather sensor as standard, so the boiler’s output can vary according to outside conditions; being perfect for hotels with fl uctuating occupancy rates and heating loads; and, fi nally, having the technology to lower a building’s energy consumption and carbon footprint.
