Online portal to train installers

Air conditioning installers can now access high quality technical training online using a new portal developed by Toshiba Air Conditioning UK. It enables customers to learn at their own pace, in order to qualify for Toshiba’s industry-leading seven year warranty

T

he online training has been launched to augment Toshiba’s popular classroom-based training courses, and is aimed particularly at busy engineers keen to update their skills at a time to suit them. It uses a combination of instructional videos, pictures and bite- sized information that users can study and return to at any time. To ensure users have absorbed key principles and knowledge, courses conclude with an assessment quiz. Upon successful completion, a printable certificate provides proof of the achievement. Users have their own training account

which records the courses they have successfully completed, either online or in the classroom. This provides automatic validation for warranty cover for equipment installed by each user, in accordance with Toshiba’s terms and conditions. To access online training, installers must have attended one VRF installation

• Toshiba Controls. The courses, which also offer downloadable content that can be used on site as an at-a-glance reference, are free to customers of Toshiba Air Conditioning UK. Toshiba plans to develop the online

training programme over time, with the addition of new courses on system design and application, as well as key technology topics, such as compressors and related components. David Dunn, managing director sales at

and service course in person. To qualify for all versions of Toshiba’s seven year warranty, installers are required to have completed all of the following courses, either in person or online: • Toshiba Digital Inverter and Super-Digital Inverter / Residential Installation and Servicing; • Toshiba VRF Installation and Servicing; • Toshiba VRF-e Installation and Servicing;

Toshiba Carrier UK, said: “We have had great take-up of our classroom-based training courses, with many thousands of engineers attending over the past three years. However, we are aware some customers find it difficult to commit a full-day to attend courses in person. The new online training portal gives them the flexibility to learn at a time, place and pace to suit them. We believe it will be a popular addition, and help our drive to update the skills of air conditioning installers across the country.”

FAST UPGRADE FOR FAST FOOD SWITCH W

hen KFC was looking to transform a Burger King outlet in Banbury, it needed an installer that could match the tight installation timeframe and an air conditioning system that could bring 21st-century levels

of efficiency, comfort and control. Transforming a Burger King fast food outlet into a KFC may sound like a

reasonably straightforward task but the recent project in Banbury, Oxfordshire involving Kinlochs and Son Limited (KSL) demonstrated that a restaurant refurbishment often requires more than just a change of menu. Scheduled to take just over seven weeks from start to finish, the KFC

franchisee was looking for a swift turnaround on installation. It was clear that the building desperately required a complete overhaul and switching the standard split type air conditioning system to a VRF heat recovery system from Mitsubishi Electric was a starting point. Kevin Gregory, contracts manager at KSL, comments: “Since 2001 we have

carried out a number of installations with KFC franchisees and have successfully combined market-leading Mitsubishi Electric technology with a

firm commitment to exceptional customer service, delivering efficient and economical air conditioning solutions that stand the test of time.” The Mitsubishi Electric City Multi VRF heat recovery system offers simultaneous heating and cooling, distributing surplus heat from cooling operations to other areas of the building when and where it is required. This offers significant benefits in the KFC outlet as waste heat from cold room equipment can be recovered and put to good use elsewhere. Initial discussions with the Banbury KFC franchisee were focused on

keeping energy consumption as low as possible and reducing equipment downtime. Kevin Gregory adds: “The franchisee was keen on the idea of saving energy via a VRF air curtain and recognised the advantages in selecting an economical system which provides a rapid return on the initial investment. During the summer months the newly installed air curtain will deliver cool air and stop flying insects from entering the premises.” Featuring two-pipe technology for quicker installation and a BC controller for ‘intelligent’ decision making, the system could reduce energy use by up to 30%.
