When Cottesloe School – a fast- growing co-educational secondary school based in Buckinghamshire – needed to upgrade its heating boilers, Lochinvar’s Herald gas-fi red condensing boilers were selected as the best option. Five Herald HCB206CE models
were installed, providing a combined output of close to 1mW. The compact design of these products was a major consideration in the specifi cation and selection of the school’s new boiler installation. Indeed, this was particularly important as access to the school plant room was restricted. At just 394mm wide, the compact boilers are able to fi t through a standard doorway. The boiler room’s refurbishment
was part of a programme intended to improve the energy performance rating of the Cottesloe School. Consequently, the high operational effi ciency of the Herald range, in addition to its ability to modulate with 5:1 turndown, were important. All Lochinvar Herald models meet the requirements of the European
Energy-related Products (ErP) Directive, and feature a stainless steel heat exchanger capable of operating at working pressures of up to 11 bar. In addition to this, the Herald models also meet the most stringent Class 6 NOx emissions rating.
Nicola Hulland, business manager at Cottesloe School, felt that the improvements being made within the school’s heating plant could be used to form part of the education process by demonstrating the importance of sustainability, in order to encourage more young people to take up careers within the engineering sector. “There is a perception among
many students that engineering courses are diffi cult, so they are not drawn to them,” commented Ms Hulland. She reasoned: “If we can
explain the kind of work we are doing at the school and we demonstrate the environmental aspects, this can help to spark an interest among the more practically-minded.” Lochinvar’s Herald boilers are available in eight models, with
outputs ranging from 41 to 228kW. The boilers in place at Cottesloe School have now been operating
extremely well for over a year, providing heating services for the main building.
The heating and hot water systems are separated, and two Lochinvar EcoCharger gas-fi red condensing water heaters provide domestic hot water services.
