review Innovation

thrives at ISH I

SH, the world’s leading trade fair for the combination of water and energy welcomed 2,482 exhibitors from 61 countries, while world-

market leaders launched their latest products at the Frankfurt am Main fair from 14 to 18 March 2017. Altogether, 200,114 visitors made their way to the fair to discover the numerous innovations and the latest trends. At the same time, ISH increased its level of internationality: 64 per cent of exhibitors and 40 per cent of visitors came from outside Germany. Wolfgang Marzin, president and chief executive

officer (CEO) of Messe Frankfurt said: “ISH is growing and becoming increasingly international. The indices are outstanding and the mood in the exhibition halls was excellent. We are extremely pleased with the results of the event.” The five per cent increase in the number of international visitors to 80,045 was underpinned by the position of ISH as the world’s leading trade fair for the sector. The biggest visitor nations were China, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Poland, Belgium, Austria and Spain. Exhibitors were pleased with the large number of new contacts made and rated the show highly. The

The next ISH will be held in Frankfurt am Main from 12 to 16 March 2019.

NEW ERA FOR PUMPS T

he manufacturer of pumps and pumping systems, Wilo, put the focus squarely on digital transformation at ISH. CEO Oliver Hermes said: "Digital

transformation has arrived in our industry.” On its 1,200m² stand the company demonstrated to visitors it was a pioneer in the digital age by showcasing numerous product innovations and smart solutions. The highlight of Wilo’s stand was the Wilo- Stratos MAXO. Dr Markus Beukenberg, head of technology at Wilo said: "With this product, we are presenting the world's first truly ‘smart pump’.” “It is a completely new

category of pumps, which goes far beyond our high-efficiency pumps or so- called intelligent pumps."

‘Smart pump’ does not only mean an advanced level of connectivity for control and direct online

access to operating messages or setting operating conditions via an app, but much more, it means independent system optimisation, thanks to the latest sensor technology and control functionality. "We believe that because of the excellent levels of user-friendliness and the possibility of individual online configurability, the Wilo-Stratos MAXO truly defines a new era in pump technology," says Beukenberg.

Despite the fact that the MAXO has only just celebrated its world unveiling, the pump has already won its first award: "We are proud that the Stratos MAXO was awarded the ‘DesignPlus powered by ISH’ - the only product in the pumping industry to do this,” Beukenberg says with

justifiable pride. “The award stands as a seal of quality for products characterised by their innovative design and efficient technology. We were able to convince the judges across all three of the award criteria," he says.

exhibitors also see the economic outlook in a positive light with 88 per cent saying it is satisfactory to good. In the case of German exhibitors, this value was even higher at 93 per cent. No less impressive was the level of satisfaction on the visitor side with a potentially record-beating overall rating of 97 per cent. Accounting for around a third of all visitors, the sanitation, heating and air- conditioning installation trade represents the biggest group of visitors. Manfred Greis, spokesman for ISH Energy said: “ISH Energy 2017 exceeded our expectations and underpinned its position as the world’s leading trade fair for efficient and renewable energy. The German heating industry once again demonstrated its great innovativeness and presented convincing solutions that will make an important contribution to the success of the energy revolution. This includes not only highly efficient condensing-boiler technology with solar heating but also electric-power based systems, such as heat pumps, as hybrid systems, as well as stationary fuel-cell systems and digital applications.”

A marine inspiration

Ziehl-Abegg put the spotlight on bionics at ISH and this time a marine mammal was the idea behind a new fan development. The main focus of the stand was on the innovative fan ZAbluefin said to increase efficiency by up to 15 per cent. “The stand was inundated with visitors. That’s why our engineers have clearly underlined their position at the forefront of bionics and as leaders in fan technology,” said Peter Fenkl, chairman of the board of Ziehl-Abegg. The development engineers studied the

physical structure and characteristics of the humpback whale in order to transfer elements to the new radial impeller ZAbluefin. Acknowledged expert on whales Dr Karsten Brensing explained to visitors how evolution has optimised the 30-ton marine mammals’ bodies for movement through the water so they are also capable of undertaking journeys covering several thousand kilometres with a minimal expenditure of energy. Mr Fenkl explained which elements of the humpback whale are replicated in the radial impeller ZAbluefin: for example, the leading edge of the fan blade has an undulating profile – this is modelled on the golf-ball sized bumps on the whale’s fins. This avoids excessive turbulence, reducing both flow losses and noise. The flow engineers have also taken a close look at the whale’s rear fin, the “fluke”. The v-shaped contour of the rear section of the wing delays potential flow breaks – enabling the fan to be used for numerous different pressure ranges.

Humidification showcase

HygroMatik, a manufacturer of isothermal and adiabatic humidification systems presented its new and established products, at ISH 2017. The stand featured some of HygroMatik’s most recognised products such as the energy efficient adiabatic high and low pressure nozzle systems, HPS and LPS, as well as isothermal electrode and heater type steam humidifiers. HygroMatik also showcased its water softening and reverse osmosis systems, said to guarantee hygienic water treatment, while significantly reducing downtime and maintenance costs. HygroMatik manufactures air humidifiers and air humidification systems, offering a range of long-lasting and easily maintained products. HygroMatik’s HVAC products are now available as BIM objects which can be downloaded directly from its website.
