COLD STORAGE
The growing demand for cold storage – and why it’s here to stay
The British are no longer a nation of shopkeepers, but a nation of ‘stay- at-homers’. The UK economy is driven fi rst and foremost by consumer spending, but Covid-19 has changed the way people shop – and what they buy. Here, Paul Waldeck, executive director of Ambrey Baker Industrial Solutions, explains how consumer behaviours have changed, and how cold storage experts are rising to meet the ‘new normal’ head on.

he Covid-19 pandemic has caused massive disruption to the refrigeration and cold storage industry.
Initial stockpiling and a shock to the supply chain - notably, the move from consumers buying perishables to predominantly frozen goods – has meant, as a sector, we have to switch our initial reaction mode to one which ensures we adapt. COVID-19 has already left its mark on the industry, and it’s time for construction professionals to adapt and prepare for the future. In recent times, there has been a defi nite rise in online
shopping, with an increase in home deliveries. Suppliers are calling for more storage space to facilitate this
shift; especially because much of the demand is for long lasting use by dates, which give people less reason to leave their homes and calm concerns around secondary lockdowns which we’re now seeing rolled out across the country.
Our client activity has indicated that long term consumer food storage – cold storage – will grow. This isn’t only the case in food and drink industries, either.
For pharmaceutical businesses, medicine, drugs, blood
and plasma will also need safe and future proof storage solutions in case of increased numbers in hospitals, as we experienced earlier this year.
