REFRIGERANTS
Time to roll-up our
sleeves for the big push on refrigerants
The industry has made huge strides on the refrigerants journey, believes James Graham, sales director of Bitzer UK. He spoke to ACR News about the vital next steps ahead.
Q
: Where would you say the industry is now on the journey to more environmentally acceptable refrigerants?
A: We’ve done the nice stuff , such as creating the vision and roadmap. It’s now time to roll up our sleeves, get stuck in and make it happen. Sales of alternatives are defi nitely increasing, and in
addition to environmental drivers there are some pretty compelling reasons – legislative and economic – for end users to make the transition. The F-gas phase-out, with all the implications for potential equipment redundancy and rising refrigerant costs, is a strong stick. On the other side, the opportunity for end-users to future-proof their businesses by making environmentally- informed investment decisions now is an attractive carrot. Organisations such as Eurovent and ATMOsphere by Shecco are doing good work in promoting the benefi ts. And, of course, industry magazines continue to champion the

cause through Awards that celebrate environmentally tuned solutions. It may not yet quite be a torrent, but I think we can say the alternative refrigerants river is fl owing with increasing momentum with each passing day.
Q: Do we have a complete set of solutions for all applications aff ected by the phase-out of higher GWP gases?
A: In terms of replacing HFCs, we have a comprehensive set of alternatives already in place or in the process of coming onstream. These include the ‘naturals’, such as ammonia, hydrocarbons and CO2
, which are considered future proof in
terms of F-Gas legislation. The take-up, by the important retail sector in particular, has been dramatic and one of the shining successes so far. In addition, we have the relatively new and fast-evolving A2L-classifi ed HFOs, such as R1234ze and R454C, many of which have GWPs of less than 150. Currently, this means they can be used in new equipment past 2030.
