record in industrial environments. While ammonia systems typically involve a higher upfront cost, they can deliver signifi cant energy savings and strong whole-life performance when designed correctly. Modern ammonia installations are also typically low-charge and contained, which signifi cantly reduces risk compared with older, decentralised designs. At the same time, CO2
continues to gain traction across logistics and
industrial facilities. Faster installation times, lower upfront capital cost in some cases, a broader skills base and easier access to maintenance support make CO2
an attractive option for many operators, particularly where programme timescales and operational continuity are critical considerations.
Another factor increasingly infl uencing these decisions is skills availability. While ammonia remains well established in industrial environments, the number of engineers trained and confi dent to work on ammonia systems is relatively limited. CO2
systems, by contrast, benefi t
from a broader and more readily available skills base, which can make them easier to support over the long term. For many organisations, this is not an abstract concern but a practical one. The ability to maintain, service and respond quickly to issues on a live system now forms part of the overall risk calculation.
Rather than viewing these refrigerants as direct alternatives, there is a growing recognition that different systems and refrigerants can be deployed to suit different demands, site constraints and risk profi les. For many organisations, this marks a gradual move away from single, ageing systems towards more integrated approaches that prioritise effi ciency and resilience over time.
The key point is not to wait for the moment when all uncertainty has been removed. That moment is unlikely to arrive. Systems that are assumed to have fi ve or ten years of life remaining may, in reality, have far less once energy performance and refrigerant availability are taken into account. While asset owners do not need to commit to wholesale replacement immediately, they do need a plan. Improving energy effi ciency now, while preparing for future refrigerant and system changes, puts organisations in a far stronger position to respond when the direction becomes clearer.
