GREEN MATTERS
IOR has a remit to promote the advancement of technologies for the public benefit so it will, like most of our outputs, be available for general use. But the template is not an end in itself, it is just a kind of starting point to help customers, end users, members and our industry think about where they are now, where they want to get to and what they might need to do along that journey. Our next stage will be to provide more
tangible tools and resources such as policy papers, communications messaging, technology briefs, guidance notes and sector-based resource packs. We will be gathering data and encouraging more people across the industry to get involved – not just IOR members – to pull this ambitious initiative together. We are looking at the model for success that the IOR established with its REAL Zero initiative back in 2009. As part of REAL Zero we were able to shine a light on the subject of refrigerant leakage that people were aware of but had not worked collaborative to address up
to that point. Until the IOR brought together suppliers, end users, designers, trainers there was no focal point for best practice – only the F-gas introducing minimum standards. Since then, we have seen a dramatic reduction in emissions and a more dramatic change in attitudes to how to reduce leakage. We hope to do the same with the Beyond Refrigeration work, to point the industry to a particular direction, pool resources and open dialogues to facilitate change – it’s about working together so that we all benefit and in doing so help our industry meet their future targets.
How can we get end-users to buy into the sustainable message? End-users have been some of the most active contributors to the Beyond Refrigeration initiative and template development so far. We have had some great input from supermarkets, industrial manufacturing and cold storage sectors. It’s clear that they see this as a
critical issue and are looking to align with recommendations from groups of independent experts such as the Institute of Refrigeration. 2050 seems a long way off but the end- users know that investment decisions made today for the purchase of new equipment will have long term impacts for them. So if we as a industry, nation, sector and individual businesses are going to meet the 2050 targets and the prior carbon budgets we need to focus on this today. No one can do it alone – heating, cooling and energy activities and issues are too interrelated. The IOR’s Beyond Refrigeration template doesn’t just provide a roadmap that people have to buy into – it provides a template for something they are already working on and provides a focus for that work.
