GREEN MATTERS What else?

The Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) is encouraging RACHP businesses to move to net zero under the heading 'Beyond Refrigeration' we ask Graeme Maidment FInstR, the IOR Environment Committee chair and past president what this initiative is all about.

Why is there the need for the IOR’s 'Beyond Refrigeration' template?

The IOR’s Beyond Refrigeration template starts with the statement that climate change is an issue that everyone in all sectors needs to address 'If we do nothing today the cost to business is that we might not be in business by 2050.'

The UK Government is moving rapidly both nationally

and internationally on addressing climate change – the Government’s Ten Point Pan for a Green Industrial Revolution published in November 2020 specifically covers our sector - heat pumps and industrial processes. But we in the IOR believe there is a need to compliment such high level policy with a ground up approach, harnessing the knowledge and experience of our members. We have involved a lot of people in different sectors

in developing a template that helps to identify what is needed in a practical sense to get to net zero by 2050. There is an astounding amount of expertise and enthusiasm about this topic in our membership and we wanted to capture the areas that need to be focused on and what we felt could be achieved in this Beyond Refrigeration template. It has been an exciting challenge producing a document that is not too technology specific and looks more at how businesses need to change attitudes to how they use heating and cooling. We included a series of steps to help signpost how we believe they could make real progress in a very complicated area. The template identifies eight key ingredients – priority areas – to achieve net zero and asks 'What is our ambition?' and 'How can we get there?' in each of the areas: ■ Maximising System Performance ■ Using Best Available Technology ■ Balancing heating and cooling ■ Reducing the need for cooling ■ Using energy intelligently ■ Working together ■ Addressing people and skills ■ Whole system sustainability and more.

What other associations have contributed so far – are there 30 June 2021 any plans to involve other trade bodies other than in links?

We invited a number of key associations that were active in this area to take part and of course reviewed the outputs already available from groups such as EPEE, AREA, the International Institute of Refrigeration, British Retail Consortium, Cold Chain Federation, and others. Our starting point was that heating and cooling cuts across many industries, and serves many more, but it’s also part of the whole energy system. For these reasons we must work together in a multidisciplinary way with our brother and sister associations, and not duplicate what they are doing. Hence one of the key issues identified as part of our eight is 'Working Together'.

How can we overcome fragmentation across the different organisations and associations?

The message that we are giving through Beyond Refrigeration is that we can only deliver the level of transformation needed if we work together in a collaborative way so that we all win. Our template, and eventually our website at www.ior. org.uk/beyondrefrigeration is building a set of resources, links to other documents, tools, training that will help achieve our net zero aims.

There is a lot of material available that is very specific say to one sector or application and we aim to signpost that. In the end all these organisations whether they are UK, national or international are all working to the same aims so the real challenge is not fragmentation but trying not to duplicate something that is already out there. We want to help end users to find good reliable

information that is communicated in a language that is meaningful to them and relevant to their business objectives.

When will this template be made available for general use – and who to? Members only?

A first draft was shared at the IOR Annual Conference in April and is currently available on the IOR.org.uk website. We are refining this to launch it formally in July along with a dedicated website.
