Coldrooms and Covid


Williams Refrigeration is a specialist in coldrooms, with a wide range of products. The company has three subsidiaries, strategically sited around the UK, specialising in coldroom project management and installation. Here sales and marketing director Malcolm Harling considers the market, touching on how coldrooms are providing solutions to a variety of Covid-19 problems.

oldrooms are often associated with foodservice and it’s certainly true that a lot of our projects are in the hospitality industry. However, coldrooms are also used extensively in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors, where specialist versions are used for a range of applications, from mortuaries to the storage of highly temperature sensitive drugs and vaccines. They’re also used in many sectors of the food industry, from processing to butchers’ shops. Their fl exibility has been a huge bonus during the pandemic, as there has been an increasing focus on product safety and temperature control. Pharmaceutical applications have been a particular area of growth. Pharmaceutical coldrooms require a variety of specialist features, with

temperature control being absolutely critical. Typically, the range will be 2°C to 8°C, but it may be outside this range, depending on the requirements of the contents. Coldrooms can accommodate diff erent temperatures to suit the application, and the supplier’s engineer can adjust the temperature if the requirements change at any time. The value of pharmaceuticals can be incredibly high. We recently installed a pharmacy coldroom that was just 2.5m by 2.5m, and the value of the contents, when it was only half full, was £300,000. It’s not surprising that a key diff erence between pharmaceutical coldrooms and other types is that they are installed with a backup system – so if one goes down, the other kicks in to ensure a safe, stable temperature
