REFRIGERANTS As the UK tightens its F-gas phasedown measures, with

more stringent changes expected from January 2026, it becomes increasingly important for businesses to understand the regulatory landscape.

This is particularly true when considering the array of

standards that apply to buildings, each with specifi c data requirements depending on application, use, and size. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is among the most recognised, and recently introduced Version 7. This update strengthens the focus on carbon reduction and climate resilience while emphasising Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). EPDs provide independently verifi ed, transparent data on a product’s environmental impact across its entire lifecycle.

Another emerging framework is NABERS (National

Australian Built Environment Rating System), which has gained traction in the UK through its adoption by CIBSE. Initially developed in Australia, NABERS assesses buildings on their energy, water, waste management, and indoor environmental quality, using a star rating system to highlight sustainability and effi ciency. Its energy ratings, in particular, encourage the reduction

of operational energy consumption and promote using renewable energy sources.

The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard also plays

a signifi cant role, off ering a clear framework for achieving true net-zero carbon emissions. It addresses operational and embodied carbon emissions, providing a comprehensive set of principles and measurable targets to guide developers, designers, and property managers towards carbon-neutral buildings. In this evolving landscape, the importance of partnering with an experienced and knowledgeable supplier cannot be overstated.

Daikin, for instance, off ers a wealth of expertise and can

provide essential data on embodied carbon, operational energy consumption, and lifecycle analysis to help organisations meet decarbonisation goals eff ectively. This kind of partnership can bridge the gap between ambition and action, ensuring businesses remain compliant with regulations while gaining a competitive edge and enhancing brand reputation. The journey toward net zero by 2050 demands immediate and decisive action across all sectors. With the proper guidance and support, businesses can navigate regulatory requirements, transition to sustainable refrigerants, and embrace environmentally responsible practices, ultimately contributing to a greener, more sustainable future.

Addressing the use of HFCs is vital in

reducing the environmental impact of

HVAC systems and meeting the UK’s

climate goals.
