PROGRAMMABLE MINIATURE KIT ENCODERS HINGES IN A RANGE OF MATERIALS
MiniCODER GEL 2444-P, the latest addition to the MiniCODER range of miniature kit encoders manufactured by Lenord + Bauer, is now available in the UK from Motor Technology. Typical applications include high speed machining, machine tools, high speed cutting, milling and grinding spindles, screw spindles in vacuum pumps, test stands, hybrid motor drives and torque motors. The GEL 2444-P sensor has been designed with an additional integrated chip that can be programmed with user defined values and calibration data. In conjunction with the GEL 211 service tool, the calibration data can be obtained and saved to the unit over a WiFi connection using the web enabled interface, aiding correct installation and reliable operation. Small differences in the output signals are monitored and corrected, such as signal amplitude and sin/cos amplitude differential.
The microprocessor within the kit-encoder also features a configurable operating-hour counter
that can monitor the operating time of the unit. Up to seven speed bands can be set to monitor the operation of the sensor and thus the axis. It is also possible to store information in the sensor – such as the reference number of a high-speed-spindle or the axis description. As the sensors are often embedded within the machine, with difficult access, the chip also stores the type code and serial number of the sensor so that it can easily be accessed with the GEL 211 service tool. The MiniCODER plus system is comprised of a scanning unit and a precision target wheel that fits
directly onto the shaft or spindle of the machine. The sensor’s magnetic, contact-free operation acquires the speed and position of the rotating shaft and is resistant to shocks, vibration, high temperatures and electrical interference. MiniCODER GEL 2444-P is suitable for shaft diameters from 8-500mm and is physically and
electrically compatible with all other MiniCODER GEL 244x versions. Motor Technology
POWERING AVIONICS SYSTEMS
Wind River VxWorks 653 Platform is being used by Airbus Helicopters, a division of Airbus Group, for its new Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) system, Helionix. Helionix, which includes the certified H175 and H145 civilian rotorcrafts, significantly improves helicopter management and, with its IMA approach, is said to provide unprecedented levels of performance and safety. VxWorks 653 powers the multi-function display, flight management and control systems, as well as the autopilot of the new aircraft. In addition, it provides resource management and partitioning capabilities that allow multiple independent applications of different safety criticality levels to run on a single target platform. VxWorks 653 is a COTS system for
delivering safety-critical IMA applications. It serves as a key technology in a wide range of commercial, space, safety and mission-critical programs, both manned and unmanned – including Airbus and Boeing commercial and military aircraft such as the Airbus A400M and Boeing 787.

To help engineers find the right hinge for their application, WDS has launched a new range, available in polyamide, die cast zinc, aluminium, steel and stainless steel, with a variety of finishes. The range is divided into eight product
groups. Butt hinges are available in standard versions and lift off versions, with the latter typically morticed into a door frame for a flush finish. Surface mounted hinge types include countersunk hinges, male thread hinges, locking lever hinges, etc. Concealed hinges are suitable for where the hinge needs to be hidden; and lift off hinges are designed to be fastened or welded into place to provide a semi permanent fixture; while torque hinges are intended to support heavy
WATERPROOF USB CONNECTORS
New from Astute Electronics is a range of USB connectors from Amphenol LTW Technology which are waterproof to IP67 or IP68, with a current rating of 1.5A. The range includes USB 3.0 A, 2.0 A and 2.0 B types, plus Mini USB 2.0 B and Micro USB 2.0 AB models. The devices have gold-plated copper alloy contacts and
the connector body is made from PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) to UL94V-0 flammability. The temperature range for the receptacle is -20 to +80˚C or -40 to +105˚C depending on type. Specifications include contact resistance up to 30mΩ, insulation resistance of 1000mΩ at 500V DC, and breakdown voltage above 500V AC for one minute. They are field installable and come with cable from 1-5m.

loads or to provide stable positioning in applications where doors need to be stable when part- or fully-opened. Locking hinges include a clamping handle which allows the door to be secured in an open position without the danger of it inadvertently swinging shut. With exposed hinges, the butt of the
hinge is visible from the outside, which can have functional advantages in some applications. Spring release hinges meet the needs of applications where a quick release mechanism is required.
