MATERIALS IN DESIGN & PROTOTYPING  PRODUCTS USING SLA TO CREATE CONCEPT MODELS

Technology from Ogle has been used to create 1:24 concept models (the size commonly used for toy cars) for Honda as part of the company’s bid to develop autonomous driving technology. The company plans to put driverless vehicles on the roads by 2020, so the seven models, which were used for the ‘Honda. Great Journey.’ advertising campaign, were used to illustrate what self-driving cars could eventually look like. Ogle’s stereolithography (SLA) machines were used to create the tiny component parts for the models. Dave Bennion, marketing and sales director for Ogle, said: “To achieve the required paint finishes and component parts for the models, there was no room for error. Each finish had to be executed to perfection, resulting in a seamless look when being filmed.” To create a hammock effect, a net finish was achieved by sourcing

multiple net fabrics and lacquering the component parts so that they were clear, before applying paint over the pattern of the fabric. Some of the fine decorative touches were shaped by hand using stainless steel and copper wire to create a robust and realistic effect. Ogle’s paint department was tasked with delivering finishes that had never been created before. In the final assembly, all the parts were thoroughly tested to allow for the

required movement within each model. Two of the seven models, The Mountain Climber and Jungle Jumper, went through even further inspection because many elements were functional and needed to move, so the overall balance and strength of the model had to be tested and maintained.

MIX AND MATCH COLOUR GRADIENTS WITH 3D PRINTER

The J750 3D printer from Stratasys enables customers to mix-and-match full colour gradients. New to the Objet Connex multi-colour, multi-material series of 3D Printers, this enables customers to choose from more than 360,000 different colour shades plus multiple material properties – ranging from rigid to flexible and opaque to transparent. Prototypes can include a vast array of colours, materials

and material properties in the same part, speeding production of realistic models, prototypes and parts for virtually any application need – as well as delivering the versatility to produce tooling, moulds, jigs, fixtures and more. Using the J750, designers and engineers can physically experience true product prototypes within hours of developing an initial concept. The printer is supported with a streamlined workflow

beginning with the new PolyJet Studio, software which has an intuitive interface that allows users to simply choose materials, optimise the build and manage print queues. Assignment of colours, transparencies and rigidity is eased via familiar design controls. Colour textures can be loaded fully intact via VRML files imported from CAD tools. The Stratasys J750 also minimises downtime associated with

material changeovers. Featuring a large, six-material capacity, it keeps the most used resins loaded and ready for printing. Newly designed print heads means simulated production plastics, like Digital ABS, can be 3D printed in half the time of other Stratasys PolyJet systems. As 3D printed models are delivered complete with full colours, colour textures and multiple materials, no time is wasted on painting and assembly.
