BATTERY REPLACEMENT SYSTEM HELPS POWER LIGHTWEIGHT ELECTRIC CAR
A new e-mobility project – Adaptive City Mobility (ACM) 2 – has been funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The result is a lightweight electric car, the CITY eTAXI, which is designed for the urban living space. Lithium-ion battery producer, BMZ, has developed a modular battery replacement system for the vehicle. The CITY eTAXI, which has been presented as
a final 1:1 design prototype, is able to operate completely independently of either existing or future charging stations. The vehicle is driven by two hub motors at the rear
which are powered by battery modules interconnected via an intelligent battery management system. The battery capacity of six times 1.9kWh allows a distance of about 120km. In addition, it currently has a drive power of around 15kW which enables the lightweight car to accelerate to more than 80km/h if required. When developing the battery replacement system,
which is integrated in both sides of the vehicle in the lower body, a solution was needed that would enable the driver to immediately replace the single low voltage modules with fully charged versions, without long waiting times. The replacement starts with an authentication of the driver at a special replacement station. The station then releases trays in which the empty modules can be inserted; and the trays with the charged modules then open up. The single modules, which weigh around 15kg, are intrinsically safe and
inactive when dismounted – activation occurs after installation in the vehicle. In the future, automatic replacement may be possible. Alternatively the modules can be charged via an integrated 3kW onboard charging device within around six hours. It may also be possible in the future to store energy
from PV plants or public electricity in the station batteries for a stabilization of the electricity network.

SMART SYSTEM MAKES PARKING EASY
A ‘smart monitoring system’ has been developed by Analog Devices and Cambridge Consultants that monitors space occupancy for on-street and indoor garage parking spaces. Drivers could, for example, be assigned a parking space as they enter a garage, or request a specific space in advance if they plan to shop at a particular store. If the data from the occupancy sensor is combined with number plate recognition, drivers could also be offered automated payment and help with locating their parked car. The system is enabled by Analog
Devices’ Blackfin Low Power Imaging Platform (BLIP) – an embedded computer vision platform targeting real-time sensing applications. Using a highly sophisticated algorithm designed by Cambridge Consultants, BLIP uses machine vision to establish whether each space is free or occupied.
