ith the use of paper bags becoming more popular, Nort Makina in
collaboration with Kollmorgen Elsim, has developed a bag manufacturing machine that offers an increase in production speeds of around 30%. With the machines currently in use, it can take a fair amount of time to switch moulds when changing production, the company explains. In addition, these produce around 600 to 700 paper bags per minute, depending on product dimensions. The new machine, however, is not only capable of delivering in various dimensions and characteristics, so it can switch between different product processes several times a day, but it can produce 900 to 1000 paper bags per minute. Production manager, Zekeriya Gungor,
commented: “While the same product in Europe is manufactured as 500kg, this number drops to 200kg in Turkey, because that is the trend in demand and the manufacturer has to comply with this. If we take the daily production capacity of a machine as one tonne, and assume that four different products are manufactured within a day, an average of four product- switches would be necessary. When the switching time of each product is around 30 minutes, this implies that nearly two hours are spent on changing the machine-settings every day. This is a serious amount of time.”

EQUIPMENT All the electronic systems and software within the machine were developed by Kollmorgen, and the following products were selected: AKD PDMM motion control (superior speed industrial PC); AKD servo drive; CDDR direct drive; and the AKM servo motor. Providing intermediate-level computer performance, the Advanced Performance
Ethernet-based servo drives that can easily be integrated into all types of applications, the AKD Series offers a plug-and-play startup system for instant and uninterrupted access to everything in the machine. Also in use is the Cartridge DDR
motor. This has a bearing-free design feature that is directly attached to the load using an integrated factory-aligned high resolution feedback device, as well as machine bearings to support the rotor. Most models can be assembled in less than five minutes. The AKM synchronous servo motors offer limitless joint design modification in over 500,000 standard products and practice.
MEETING REQUIREMENTS Commenting on the new machine, Gungor said: “Even though we haven’t yet launched the machine, we are already receiving significant attention. We manufacture paper bags, laminating and flexo-printing machines. As a company, we produce bespoke projects in addition to our main product groups, conduct case studies and provide consulting services. We are capable of addressing all kinds of requirements in the best way. Kollmorgen has been an important, supportive partner to us throughout our entire and complex manufacturing and design process.”

CONVEYING APPLES DURING CIDER PRODUCTION
A leading cider maker has selected attachment chain from Renold for use on the conveying system that transports freshly picked apples into a washing machine at the beginning of the cider making process. The two stainless steel conveyor chains supplied feature extended pins instead of rollers, and a food grade polymer block in-between the plates. The 40mm pitch, 3000lb chains were produced with 10mm diameter extended pins on every two pitches to support nylon rollers on the washing machine’s conveying system. Alec Annand, operations manager at Renold’s UK Service Centre, said: “We were delighted to win
this order from a leading cider maker as it shows the confidence the company has in the quality of our products.” For applications in the food and
drinks industry, Renold supplies a variety of solutions including conveyor and transmission chain, stainless steel chain and Syno nickel plated lubrication-free chain with a food industry approved coating on the rollers.
