SUPPLEMENT ENCLOSURE & SAFETY SOLUTIONS RITTAL BLUE E+ IN FIELD TEST AT AUDI: AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURER ALREADY CONFIRMS ENORMOUS ENERGY EFFICIENCY


With the new Blue e+ range, Rittal has launched what it states are the most efficient enclosure cooling units currently available on the market. Initial tests by car manufacturers prove that the unit delivers all the expected energy savings when operating in real life conditions. At Audi AG in Ingolstadt, Germany, these energy savings amounted to 75% for the climate control system. Rittal’s Blue e+ cooling unit is currently being performance tested at


the Audi plant. In tests on three enclosures, the new unit is being compared to two other Rittal cooling units, the current TopTherm Blue e series and an older cooling device. Tests started in January and are set to run for one year. The first results of the field tests mirrored the performance measurements achieved by Rittal. “Compared with the current TopTherm Blue e systems and under the


same conditions, Blue e+ delivered energy savings of 75% in cooling this production control system,” explained Andreas Korn, of AUDI AG’s Automation Technology Planning Division. “With its Blue e+ cooling units, Rittal is definitively setting new standards for energy efficiency in enclosure climate control,” he added. This is made possible using hybrid technology that was developed


specifically for enclosure cooling units. A heat pipe provides passive cooling, requiring energy only to power the fan motors, refrigerant flow resulting from the natural forces of convection and gravity. Additional cooling comes from a conventional refrigerant circuit only if there is insufficient from the heat pipe and, even then, part load control ensures that only as much as is needed is supplied, which not only saves energy but extends the service life of the cooling unit. The installed equipment is also better protected due to the high


temperature stability that is afforded also as a result of speed controlled components. The integrated control mechanisms, which seamlessly integrate the traditional and the cutting-edge, maintain a much tighter temperature tolerance inside the enclosure, reducing the risk of thermal shock to the components being cooled. Blue e+ cooling units cover an output range that extends up to 6,000


watts (the largest unit from the previous range delivering only 4,000 watts). Their innovative inverter technology results in compatibility with multiple voltages and so they can be easily used worldwide. UL listing permits the cooling units to be operated in the USA without any additional certification being needed. The TFT display on the front shows all relevant information at a glance.


System messages appear as plain text. Standardised communication interfaces ensure easy integration into a production plant’s monitoring system and facilitate operation. A near-field-communication (NFC) interface permits the simple adjustment of parameters on multiple devices via an NFC-enabled mobile device.
