PRODUCTS TECHNOLOGY FILE AUTOMATIC CABLE TIE INSTALLATION SYSTEM
Panduit has released its next-generation PAT 4.0 Automatic Cable Tie Installation System. According to the company, this maximises bundling productivity with gains of up to 25% over other automatic cable tie systems and over six times the speed of manual cable tie methods. This enhanced productivity is delivered via a lightweight,
ergonomic tool head capable of installing up to 84 cable ties per minute. Features of the re-designed tool dispenser include a user-friendly, touch-screen display with an icon-based menu that
supports multiple languages. This simple, easy-to-use icon navigation allows users to quickly gain familiarity with the system to address quick setup/operation, ease of routine maintenance and rapid troubleshooting tasks, resulting in increased uptime. A 30% reduction in size over its predecessor frees up valuable work station real estate and improves system mobility.

ELECTROMECHANICAL CYLINDERS
New from SKF is the Light ElectroMechanical Cylinder (LEMC) range of modular industrial actuators. These are built around SKF’s roller screw technology. Based on a modular design, the
cylinders are available in two sizes: 21mm diameter screw for axial loads of up to 40kN and 30mm diameter screw for axial loads of up to 80kN, with stroke lengths of 100mm to 600mm (21mm screw) or 800mm (30mm screw). Depending on the chosen configuration, they can operate at linear speeds of up to 1000mm/s and accelerations of up to 12m/s2
. Modular options available include
the incorporation of an anti-rotation device, different attachment configurations, gearbox ratios and multiple limit switch combinations. Of additional benefit, the LEMC
units can be equipped with a range of servomotors selected by SKF to suit different load characteristics, or with suitable mounting features to allow customers to incorporate motors from their own preferred supplier.

Exico has introduced a range of protective coatings designed to extend the working life of motors by preventing corrosion even in the most demanding environments. Corrosion classifications according to EN ISO 12944-2 start
with C1, which is typically in heated indoor applications such as offices and schools where there is a very low corrosion risk. This then rises to C5 where permanent condensation and high levels of pollution make the corrosion risk very high. C5 is split into C5-I for industrial and C5-M for marine because the two environments can be significantly different, particularly with respect to ambient salinity. Class C4 is also for
demanding environments, such as chemical manufacture and sewage processing, but can also be used for swimming pools, boat yards and inshore waterways. It is the highest class in which aluminium motors can be used, as they cannot be hot dip galvanised. Medium risk C3 covers urban applications and industrial uses
where the presence of moisture and damaging pollutants is fairly low. C2 is a low risk category, which may be under cover or inside unheated buildings, where contaminants are low but there is a risk of condensation due to temperature fluctuations.

A NEW ABSOLUTE ENCODER RANGE
Now available from Rotalink, the Output Shaft Absolute Encoders provide accurate positional information to a resolution of ±0.35˚ with a performance which is unaffected by power loss and is self-correcting in the event of electrical interference. These operate via contactless hall effect
technology which provides either a linear analogue output (0-5V) or 10bit positional data sent via a SSI (Synchronous Serial Interface). When the digital option is chosen the benefits are longer life span, higher reliability and improved noise resistance, the company explains. The encoder
is particularly effective when used in conjunction with Rotalink’s 210 gearbox and 24mm brushed DC motor, which results in a compact servo package measuring just 50 x 50 x 34mm and weighing 100g. The single turn option operates
through the full 360˚ of rotation to accurately monitor its position indefinitely and without power. The multi-turn unit, meanwhile, operates to a maximum of 32,000 revolutions whilst still providing the full resolution of 10 bits per 360˚ and is fitted with an integral rechargeable battery. The use of an extended SSI interface
with the multi-turn unit allows the end-user the option of programming of zero position and maximum rotation limits as well as resetting any error codes. Typical applications for these absolute
encoder/gearbox/motor packages include; motorised valves, pan/tilt mechanisms and vending carousels.

COMPACT LINEAR STAGE WITH ULTRASONIC PIEZOMOTOR Alternatively, they can be supplied
with a smart asynchronous motor and integrated control box. By eliminating the requirement for an external motor controller, this option simplifies wiring and system configuration, and even allows the LEMC to be used as a standalone system on simpler machines, programmable via an NFC-capable smartphone.

34 JUNE 2016 | DESIGN SOLUTIONS
Ultrasonic piezomotors are small, fast and inexpensive. With the U-521, PI has now added a compact linear stage to its portfolio with dimensions of just 35 × 35 × 15mm. This, the company explains, reaches maximum velocities up to 200mm/s with dynamic start-stop behaviour and is suitable for travel ranges up to 18mm. The patented drive principle –
oscillating piezoceramic actuators acting directly on a linear-guided runner – runs silently, and is self-locking. That means that no energy is consumed at rest, there is no heat to be dissipated, and the typical servo jitter is not an issue. The integrated direct-measuring
optical linear encoder works at a resolution of 400nm or even 100nm; this means that the compact linear positioning stage can achieve minimum incremental motion of two or 0.3µm. Applications are in industry and research – for example, automatic micromanipulation, positioning of samples or when adjusting optical components such as binoculars or camera lenses. Vacuum-compatible versions (to 10-6
hPa) are also available.
