The University of Leeds is saving over 809 tonnes in carbon emissions and £194,000 a year in energy costs following the installation of 94 ABB variable speed drives (VSDs) ranging from 5.5 to 55 kW.


The Leeds University project formed part of its Carbon Management Plan. It included installing VSDs on motors powering fans in air handling units and fume extraction equipment and water pumps in more than 20 buildings used for teaching and research. Most of the assessed motors had no speed control, being connected direct-on-line. The drives are controlled by a building management system (BMS) using a 4-20 mA connection to provide speed references to the drive and monitor alarms. ABB drives can monitor their own energy use and run hours and this has been used to identify the kWh used at various times, thereby proving the savings.


ABB authorised value provider Halcyon Drives was chosen to supply the drives as it was able to meet all of the university’s technical specifications and also has the ability to provide service for drives. Harmonic mitigation was an important factor.

The ABB ACH550 drive has harmonic mitigation built-in as standard. Swinging choke technology ensures the drive delivers up to 25 percent fewer harmonics at partial loads compared to a conventional choke of equal size.


Robert Douglass, Energy Project Officer for the university, said: “Due to the nature of the research in some of the buildings the drives were being installed in, we wanted to ensure that harmonics were being controlled at source as much as possible.


“One reason is to minimise the impact of harmonics on other equipment fed from the same distribution board. Another is to minimise any increase to the building supply point and the associated high voltage transformer. To date we have not had any issues with harmonics.”

Gilberts Blackpool has invested in new laser cutting technology designed to deliver even greater precision to its components that help ensure thousands of buildings across the country maintain a fresh internal atmosphere. The Platino 200 Lpt21530 laser cutter is now operational in Gilberts’ 85,000sq ft manufacturing facility – replacing a traditional CNC punch press – processing two- dimensional components for the company’s range of ventilation grilles, louvres and diffusers.

This latest addition complements the state of the art in house test centre opened in 2014, plus new warehousing facilities at the end of 2016. “The laser cutter gives us and our customers, numerous advantages,” explains Gilberts’ Technical Director, Roy Jones. “It delivers enhanced precision, to within ±1mm. It enables greater complexity of detailing than we could achieve by our previous method (stamping out metal aluminium and steel parts using CNC punch press). It is much faster, especially on long profiles lines and


provides better component nesting which reduces material wastage significantly.”

Luceco lights save energy at Kuwait International Airport


First opened in 1928 as a refuelling point for British planes on their way to India, Kuwait International Airport has seen many refurbishments and additions to its infrastructure.


Luceco met the design brief for the airport by providing energy efficient, low maintenance lighting that will provide the airport with cost savings whilst enhancing the passenger experience through more effective lighting.


Supplied through Musaed Salem Al-Abduljader Co, Luceco delivered the LED lighting solution required with a quantity of more than 6000 18W Carbon luminaires replacing 2X26W CFL Downlights. Carbon Downlights are an ideal replacement for compact fluorescent


downlights, offering running cost savings of more than 60%. Designed to retrofit ceiling cut outs of common compact fluorescent downlights, the Carbon is also supplied with interchangeable bezel options.


With the project completed, CO2 emissions have been reduced by over 9 tonnes annually and energy savings of 68% have been calculated with additional savings gained from not having to replace failed fluorescent lamps, providing a truly no maintenance, cost effective LED lighting solution for Kuwait International Airport.

The original heating system at Liverpool’s Town Hall comprised standard fan convectors covered with decorative panels. This restricted the heat distribution and prevented warm air circulating effectively.


uSmith’s Caspian Concealed fan convectors were developed for Liverpool Town Hall.


The heating system was unable to reach the required temperature to heat the building successfully, leaving many larger rooms chilly. In addition, the town hall’s high ceiling created further challenges and the Council needed to find a solution to address each of these issues properly as well as protect the listed building’s interiors properly. The 20 Caspian Concealed units installed behind panels in the walls enable visitors to feel the effects of the heat while the products themselves remain concealed. The ducts were positioned so the heat is


distributed effectively around the building without compromising the internal fabric of the building or the heating solution. This is arguably the most innovative and flexible heating solution by a concealed fan convector in the UK today, perfect for restorations and projects where the internal physical appearance of the property is essential to the overall appeal of the building.
