n a post-Brexit vote survey undertaken by manufacturer, Giacomini UK, 76% of those questioned said country of manufacture was an important factor when it came to purchasing. When asked if the country of origin was checked before purchasing building and HVAC supplies, just 19% said that they never check – which demonstrates the importance of a product’s origin when making decisions about purchasing.

Some 83.5% of respondents said they preferred to buy products from a European manufacturer, with only 8%

saying that they would never buy a product if they knew it was made in Europe.

The survey also focused on more specific issues within the HVAC industry and asked respondents if heat interface units had made converting offices to residential properties more achievable.

An overwhelming 84% agreed, which reinforces the noticeable growth that Giacomini UK has seen since regulations surrounding planning permission were altered, meaning that Class B1 offices could be converted to Class C3 residential dwellings without

REL adds Romford leisure scheme to its expanding project list

EL has been awarded a contract to deliver the electrical works at a £25m leisure development.

Located in Romford, the scheme is being built by Willmott Dixon for Havering Council. It includes an eight-lane competition swimming pool, training pool, fitness suite, 56m x 26m ice rink and associated leisure facilities within the heart of the town centre.

Appointed by Kershaw Mechanical Services, REL is responsible for the £2m electrical element of the project, which is scheduled to take 12 months.

REL’s Managing Director, Toby Buckley said: “We’re looking forward to working in partnership with Kershaw to help deliver the Romford Leisure development, which is set to regenerate the area and secure competition-level ice-skating and swimming.

“The electrical design is complex so we’ve been working closely with

the need for specific planning and development permission. Matt Lowe, Managing Director of Giacomini UK – which produces plumbing brassware and radiator valves in Italy – commented: “Post- Brexit attitudes towards all the EU were always going to be interesting and our survey gave us some fascinating insights into mindsets and purchasing decision making factors.

“It would appear that people are now more conscious of where products come from but that EU products are still thought to be the best – despite the outcome of the referendum!”

TV comedian Hugh Dennis is confirmed for industry awards

lmhurst Energy, the energy performance rating organisation, has announced a series of TechNet events across the UK, designed to provide energy assessors with networking and Continuing Personal Development (CPD) opportunities.

“Now in their third successful year, our two hour TechNet networking events provide a wonderful chance for energy assessors to get together with their peers to discuss industry developments and innovations in energy assessment whilst expanding their network of contacts,” explains Martyn Reed, Managing Director of Elmhurst Energy.

“Elmhurst's TechNet is also designed to help energy assessors keep up to date with potential business opportunities and support them in building a better business. We have kept the agenda broad enough to really appeal to our members, members of other schemes and people from various sustainability related organisations.” For more information and to book, visit:

rigorous testing for HIUs S

AV Systems has welcomed the announcement of a new regime for testing heat interface units (HIUs), noting its potential to significantly improve the performance of heat networks.

“Under-performance of heat networks is often down to poorly designed HIUs that are unable to cope with variations in the system and fail to maintain the temperature differentials required for optimum efficiency,” said SAV Sales Director, Jan Hansen.

“This new testing regime is more demanding than its predecessor and the adoption of the new test standard by the Building Engineering Services Association will ensure wider compliance,” he added.

SAV has supported HIU testing since the introduction of an earlier regime developed by Fairheat with support from the then Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC). The first round of tests showed that SAV’s Danfoss FlatStation HIUs provided the lowest VWART (Volume Weighted Average Return Temperatures) values of all HIUs tested. SAV will now be submitting FlatStations for testing under the new regime. “We are very focused on the performance of the whole system at both full and part load conditions and FlatStations are optimised to deal with varying system differential pressures and high performance at low, high and dynamic DHW tapping conditions,” Jan Hansen added. “We are therefore confident that they will exceed the requirements of the new tests. We are also particularly pleased the new regime will conduct tests based on both 70°C and 60°C primary supply temperatures as Danfoss FlatStations are optimised to perform efficiently with the low temperature heat networks of the future.” “Indeed, we would like to see even more rigorous HIU testing, underpinned by penalties for heat networks that don’t perform adequately.”
