ne of the world’s leading vehicle tyre manufacturers, has installed seven Stertil Combilok vehicle restraint systems to support warehousing operations at its production plant in Dundee. During operation, the Combilok is fully interlocked: the loading bay door cannot be opened until the Combilok is in

position and the Combilok cannot be released until the door is closed again and it is safe to drive away. Totally automatic in operation, the Combilok also overcomes any language difficulties that may arise with drivers delivering from all over the world. The Combilok helps companies to fulfil their health and safety obligations in loading bays. It also eliminates damage to expensive goods and equipment and helps guard against theft. Importantly, the Combilok system accommodates most types of commercial vehicles including those with tail lifts, mudguards, underrun protection bars or side skirts.

Extensive handling equipment range features explosion protection as standard

he J D Neuhaus extensive range of handling equipment, including hoists and cranes are all engineered for extremes, providing safe operation in dust laden atmospheres or other explosion-hazardous areas such as the chemical manufacture and processing environments. All the JDN products, which include both compressed air and hydraulically operated units are Explosion Protected as Standard. This ensures that all JDN products are safe for continuous and long-term

operation in potentially explosive chemical atmospheres as well as the more insidiously dangerous conditions where high levels of airborne dusts exist. This can include combustible dusts, high concentrations of airborne dusts, or wherever a dust cloud is confined with an oxidant present (ie typically atmospheric oxygen) and particularly where there is an ignition source. The oxidation of other commonly known materials such as coal and sawdust can also be the source of a dust explosion

New standard for forklifts used where powders and dusts could ignite

T

he new EU standard EN1755:2015 is set to impact the design of materials handling equipment intended for use in Zone 21 and 22 hazardous areas, where powders and dusts are present.

“A spark from unprotected electrical equipment on a

forklift, excess heat from the engine, motors, brakes or other components can ignite a layer or cloud of powder in the workplace,” says Steve Noakes,

Engineering

Manager for leading explosion protection conversion company Pyroban.

Powders and dusts are found throughout industry as

raw materials or as waste, the by-product of a production process. The majority are combustible such as flour, cocoa, milk, polymers and sugar, however, carbon black, aluminium and other metals are conductive.

Steve Noakes, Engineering Manager, Pyroban

A risk assessment will define whether an area where powders or dusts are present needs to be classified as Zone 21 (higher risk) or 22. In classified Zone 21 or 22 areas specially protected equipment should be used, categorised as either 2D or 3D respectively. Forklifts are no exception.

“EN1755:2015 will affect the design of forklifts used in Zone 21 and 22 areas in the chemical, food and drink supply chains and in various manufacturing and logistics businesses,” says Steve, explaining that EN1755:2015 is the standard by which conversion companies,

like Pyroban,

convert forklift trucks so that they are safe for operation in hazardous areas and comply with the ATEX 2014/34/EU* Directive.

“We encourage forklift OEMs and dealers to engage with Pyroban early to ensure they are fully aware of their responsibilities and how these changes will affect them directly,” says Steve.

Pankl Racing Systems chooses flexible KNAPP shuttles

s part of the installation of its new production facility at its headquarters in Kapfenberg, Pankl Racing Systems has selected KNAPP’s flexible YLOG- Shuttle system for automation of the small parts warehouse and supply of the workstations. Pankl develops, manufactures and markets engine and drivetrain systems as well as chassis parts for racing cars, luxury vehicles and the aerospace industry. The new manufacturing site for high-performance motorcycle gearboxes, featuring the new automated storage system, is due to begin operation in 2017. “We opted for the concept from KNAPP because it’s clear that the core components of the system have been carefully thought through and are technically sophisticated,” explained Stefan Zinner, Series Production Manager at Pankl. “Another crucial factor was the extremely productive co- operation during the concept phase. The project engineers and product managers were quick to grasp our unique requirements and went on to develop excellent solutions.”
