FEATURE TOOLS & TOOLING GRIP MILLING CHUCK ELIMINATES PULLOUT COMPACT LATHE
Now available from Industrial Tooling Corporation (ITC) is the BIG KAISER Mega Perfect Grip. This simple to handle, heavy- duty milling chuck has been developed for machining heat resistant super alloys (HRSA) as it eliminates end mill pull-out under heavy torque loads. For manufacturers using milling chucks
pull-out is a major issue, particularly when machining HRSA’s including titanium or inconel. In demanding applications such as energy and aerospace there is a need for guaranteed security against pull-out. Eliminating this prevents costly damage to parts or delays in manufacturing processes. The Mega Perfect Grip has fully concentric clamping and combines the accuracy and cutting performance of heavy-duty milling chucks with the pull- out security of solid side-lock tool holders. The concept is simple and assembly is
quick. To keep the system cost-effective it is based around milling cutters with a standard Weldon flat (DIN 1835-1). No special grinding or threading of the
milling cutter is required. To assemble, insert the exclusive key grip into the Weldon flat of the end mill. Align the key grip with one of three key grip grooves inside the chuck body and insert the cutting tool until it depresses a spring in the clamping bore. The spring will consequently function to remove the gap between the key grip and the wall of the groove. This provides a slight axial preload on
the tool until final tightening is performed. Rotate the end mill approximately 20° until

the grip stops securely against a stopping pin. This engagement prevents any slip under high torque. To complete tool installation the operator can tighten the clamping nut until it contacts the positive stop of the chuck body. The three key grip grooves in the chuck
body serve to provide channels for high volume coolant to reach the cutter. This is necessary when milling HRSAs to
dissipate heat and to remove chips efficiently. This innovative chuck solves the problem of pullout completely, combining innovation with ease-of-use and industry standards. The Mega Perfect Grip is available in BIG-PLUS BBT and HSK-A100 for Ø20mm to 32mm.

choice of the Fagor 8037 or Siemens 808D CNC control units that are fully conversational to guide the user through the programming process. Operator- friendly control units enable the customer to conduct everything from straight, taper and profile turning through to screw cutting and other more challenging tasks that can all be applied through full ISO programming if desired. The machine gives a swing over the bed of 402mm and can be in 750 or 1000mm between centres. Standard features include a complete coolant system, automatic bed-way lubrication, electronic hand wheels for X and Z axes, AC spindle motor with AC feed drives and motors, 4-way automatic tool post, interlocking guarding and chip collection system for the complete turning solution. As well as conversational programming customers can upload or download programs via an RS232 port or alternately through USB or RJ45 ports that are integrated in the control unit. Optional features include a choice of a
3 or 4 jaw chuck, fixed or travelling steadies, live centres, face plates and an 8-station tooling turret.

HIGH PERFORMANCE AV WIRE EDM MACHINES IMPROVE SURFACE FINISH
Now available from Warwick Machine Tools is the new range of ONA AV wire EDM machines. Two models are compact: the ONA AV25 model with axis travels of 400 x 300 x 250 mm in X, Y and Z respectively and the larger ONA AV35 model with travels of 600 mm in X, and 400 mm in Y and Z. Both have U-V travels of 120 by 120 mm. The machine layout reduced installed floorspace by around 20% compared to existing models of similar dimensions. Using a modular design concept the large-
scale AV machines are designed for wire cutting bulky components. The range starts with the fast ONA AV60 with cutting speeds up to 450 mm2/min. It has axis travels of 800 mm in X and 600 mm in Y while the Z-axis can be specified as 500, 600, 700 or 800 mm to accommodate the workpiece that can weigh up to 5,000 kg. The AV80 is able to take the same weight on the worktable it extends the axes to 1,000 mm in X, 600, 800 or 1,000 mm in Y with the same Z-axis range options as the AV60. Both the AV100 and AV130 can accept loads up to 10,000 kg on the worktable and

specified in a wide range of configurations. The AV100 has travels of 1,500 mm in X, 1,000 or 1,300 mm in Y and 600, 700 or 800 mm in Z. Extending the X-axis to 2,000 mm the other
two axes of the AV130 are available with the same optional travels as the AV100. All four large machine tools feature U and V axis travels of 500 by 500 mm and a maximum 30° taper cut capability. For ease of operation ONA has developed a new CNC with CAD/CAM for the AV
range that exceeds the demands of the most advanced programmer while offering an extremely user-friendly interface. The CNC allows control of up to 8 axes simultaneously, has CAD/CAM incorporated and a 23 inch touchscreen monitor. A 3D viewer graphically displays the workpiece, cutting position and wire path while 3D set up with optional touch probing is supported. A new digital generator that monitors and uses digital technology to tightly control the discharge process can deliver cutting performance and surface finish benefits for the new AV range. In single pass precision cutting the enhancements in performance of AV machines compared to previous ONA and other wire EDM machines sees an increase of cutting speed up to 40% while improving precision by 20%, a vertical precision of 10 µm per side is achieved even at elevated cutting speeds.
