COLD STORAGE SOLUTIONS FEATURE
FORKLIFT WORKS WELL IN THE COLD C
old Chain Storage Network (CCN), one of Asia’s leading temperature
controlled storage and distribution specialists has replaced its articulated lift truck fleet at its Malaysia facility with 8 new Flexi AC CS articulated forklifts designed and built by Narrow Aisle. The fleet will operate at CNN’s 200,000 square foot facility which provides chilled, frozen, deep frozen and ambient storage for customers. The Flexi AC CS fleet will be supplied and maintained by Prestar Marketing, from Narrow Aisle’s global distributor network. Prestar has distributed, rented and serviced forklifts and warehousing equipment in the region for many years. The Flexi AC CS is used by many of the
world’s leading cold store operators. Its ability to increase conventional pallet storage space by up to 30% compared with reach trucks combined with its VNA aisle performance in modern power mobile rack systems has dramatically reduced cold store warehouse logistics costs for many users. Despite its ultra-compact dimensions the Flexi AC CS has capacity for loads of up to 2000kg and can lift to over 12 metres while its specially designed and conditioned electrical and hydraulic system allows constant change of use

between cold and ambient environments. The Flexi AC CS can operate continuously at temperatures as low as -28°C and only needs to leave the cold store for a battery change as battery charging can take place in the cold store itself if this is what the design of the store dictates. A fully insulated and heated cab system
is available to operators who need high volume pallet throughput. “This is an important contract from a part of the world that has embraced Flexi articulated forklift truck technology with enthusiasm,” comments sales and marketing director John Maguire. “CCN was moved to seek a higher quality supplier after experiencing operational problems with a US-sourced brand.”

Research conducted by Dearman has found that replacing the UK’s fleet of diesel-powered transport refrigeration units with zero-emission alternatives could save the same amount of NOx as taking around 1.9 million diesel cars off the road. The findings indicate that equipping a Euro6-standard 17-tonne rigid body truck with a zero-emission refrigeration system as opposed to a diesel-powered unit would cut the vehicle’s overall engine emissions of NOx by 73%. Refrigeration systems on trucks are typically powered by an auxiliary diesel engine. Poorly regulated, these can emit up to six times the NOx and 29 times the particulate matter of a truck’s Euro6 propulsion engine. Supporting and incentivising the
introduction of zero-emission alternatives to these disproportionately polluting auxiliary engines could have a significant positive impact on air quality and on the success of clean air zones. Alternative technologies are now
coming to market that are commercially viable and operationally beneficial. Adoption of these will enable operators to make their refrigerated fleets cleaner and compliant before any punitive legislation takes effect.
