INSIGHT RPG Career transitions

Would you consider a portfolio career, part time work or early retirement? What are the biggest risks of part-time or freelance work? How can governments or companies better support non-traditional workers? Can a portfolio career be sustainable long-term?

should see career transitions as just another element of personal development planning.

Career transition allows us to explore new interests, acquire new skills, and redefine our professional identity. The process can often lead to increased job satisfaction and a sense of fulfilment.

Professional advancement Changing careers can open doors to new opportunities. Using the experience and skills from your work as a library, information and knowledge professional can open door to a diverse range of new roles outside traditional jobs. The move can often lead to better job prospects, higher salaries, and roles that align more closely with your values and passions. Changing and developing roles can also help you escape the danger of stagnating in your current role and help to foster continuous learning and growth.

Adaptability to change

In current job market, adaptability is essential. Career transitions help individuals develop resilience and flexibility, skills that are increasingly valuable.

Changing role or sector will inevitably expand your professional network. Engaging with new industries and roles can lead to valuable connections and opportunities that may not have been accessible otherwise. Networking is a powerful tool for career advancement.

Career transitions roundtable This CILIP Fest roundtable discussion organised by CILIP RPG (for those outside full time work) will give you ideas and motivation for taking the next step outside your existing role and perhaps outside full time work.
