JoAnn Lawson of Rocky Ridge died on May 2 at the age of 55. Lawson was born in Fred- erick and was a jouster with MJTA. She com- peted under the title Maid of Winters Cloud.

Raymond “Bumpy” H. Bradley of Fallston died on July 7 at the age of 78. He was the farm manager at Olney Farm in Harford County, where he had worked since he was 18 years old. Although his offi cial job was managing the farm, growing hay and corn and farm repairs, he did so much more for the owners and board- ers at Olney Farm. Posted by Olney Farm’s Ami Howard on their Facebook page: “He was my greeter for Olney Farm’s new boarders. He off ered hugs when he saw they were needed. He left surprise vegetables on your car seat and doorstep. Always had a kind word, a smile and a hearty laugh. For such a big strong man, he was even softer on the inside. None of us will ever be the same without him.”

Leroy Louis Rogers of Howard County died on July 6. He was 54. Rogers was a member of the Maryland Western Horse Association where he was known for his generosity, provid- ing gifts and awards to the young leadline rid- ers. He rightfully and wisely saw these kids as the future of the club and sport.

Eugene E. “Fat Back” Allen of Baltimore died on June 13. He was 88. Allen spent 80 years as an Arabber selling fresh produce and seafood in West Baltimore. “He was the old- est working Arabber at his death,” his niece Dorothy Johns told the Baltimore Sun. Allen attended city public schools in his youth and briefl y served in the U.S. Army. His mother was the fi rst African-American female Arraber in Baltimore. One of seven brothers and sisters, Allen took over the business when his moth- er’s health began to decline. He operated out of the Whatcoat Street Stables in Sandtown- Winchester, which his family had owned for years. When Whatcoat Street Stables were torn down in the 1990s to make room for low- income housing, Allen moved his business to Bruce Street. With the funds from his Arabber business, he sent fi ve children through college. When he turned 81, Allen stopped working the streets but still ran the family business and cared for the horses. Upon his death, Allen’s casket was placed on one of his wagons and processed through his neighborhood streets, passing by his home one fi nal time.
