Local Clydesdales Pull Historic Bandwagon, continued...
an expert on the wagon to help with the hitch- ing process, and as a guide to assist, if need- ed. Along with Sparrow, Bill Couser was also available as another set of eyes while hitching, as Couser was the lead outrider for Paul and the 40-horse hitch. Couser rode on the wagon as the brake man, sitting behind the driver and assistant driver and applying the brake when needed. T e braking system is very diff erent from a modern day hitch wagon, as it is similar to a steering wheel that applies pressure to the hind wheels.
As the hitch made the
fi rst step and moved the wagon for the fi rst time, Mast remembers Spar- row patting him on the back and saying, “Good job, Kid, you did it and the horses are getting it.” Daniel Mast may be the youngest driver ever to pull the Two Hemi- spheres wagon and the SPF Clydesdales may be the only team of Clydes- dales ever to hook to it. T e parade, which trav- eled down Constitution Avenue from 7th Street
to 17th Street, lasted about two hours from start to fi nish, with about 20 stops along the way. T e horses started to show some fatigue towards the end as they had to keep starting the heavy load. Once the horses returned to the disassembly area, the crew and horses enjoyed the victory of completing the parade successfully. Peter Gorman was happy with the end re-
sults, as were the 17 passengers who rode on top of the wagon during the parade. After ev- eryone was safely off the wagon and the horses
unhitched, everyone looked back on the parade and complimented SPF on their performance. Many compliments have been received about the overall success of the parade via social me- dia and messages. Suttler Post Farm thanks everyone who made
this event possible. From the show ring, to the streets of D.C., SPF likes to share with the public their Clydesdales for everyone to enjoy, and maybe spark an interest in someone to join our great draft industry.
