2017 FOAL PHOTO CONTEST
Summertime at T e Equiery is always a fun time of year as readers send in their best foal photos in hopes of having the one that we select as our August cover baby. From action shots to portraits, to mothers and foals, to owners with their equine babies, the photos we received this year were varied in theme. T e photos represent a wide variety of breeds, with 14 diff erent pure breds and six cross-breds entered. T e most popular breed was the T oroughbred, which isn’t surprising considering that it is Maryland’s offi cial state horse! However, the most popular stallion represented by entries was a Quarter Horse named Commandalena, owned by Dana Graff t of Frederick. All in all, out of the 59 diff erent foals entered, they are the produce of 45 diff erent stallions. In the end, after sifting through over 160 photos and narrowing them down to fi ve cover mock ups, we had a winner in Ellen Jordan’s interesting perspective of Royal Promise peering at the camera from under her mother Ideal’s Promise.
f , r 2017 Grand Champion
Ellen Jordan’s (White Hall) photo of the Oldenberg fi lly Royal Prom- ise (Royal Prince x Ideal’s Prom- ise), owned & bred by Margaret and Greyson Scarff of White Hall, caught the eye of most of our staff as their top cover pick. Some were drawn to the contrast between the chestnut foal and her roan mother. Others liked the innocence and promise of young life the image portrayed. But in the end, it was the photo’s clever perspective, drawing the viewer into the image, which made it our winner.

Reserve Champion
Meghan Palensky of White Hall sent us several photos of the Hanoverian fi lly Ahmanet (Apiro x Gi Gi Giselle, Grandom). T e fi lly, owned and bred by Fox Lair Sport Horses (White Hall), was shown in a classic resting pose. Her sweet, sleepy face draws the viewer into the image. Her relaxed, easy-going look makes her appealing as a cover. T e image is nice and crisp and the quality of the photography is spot on.
Another image that caught our staff ’s attention in terms of its unique perspective was Jocelyn Brooks’ (Glyndon) image of this unnamed T oroughbred fi lly, owned by Sagamore Farm, by Ghostzapper out of Na- ïve Enough (by Street Sense). T e image shows a ten- der moment between mare and foal as the two nuzzle heads. With the straw background, one staff member remarked that the intriguing image seemed like a Japa- nese pond with two koi fi sh swimming past each other.
