Redefining Leadership, Every Day
“Every day, formal and informal leaders do ordinary things that have an impact on others—simple human acts such as listening, perspective-taking, kindness, curiosity, and decision-making. I call this everyday leadership.” –Heidi Brooks, PhD, senior lecturer, Yale School of Management
Although this issue’s theme is workforce development, it could also be leadership. People in senior living at all levels are both “formal and informal leaders,” as Brooks puts it.
From the C-suites to the executive director to the direct caregiver, people exercise this “everyday leadership.” In this time of multiple crises, this leadership is a superpower.
Most of all, as Brooks says, the simple human acts you do have great impact.
The 2020 Argentum Award Honorees (p.28) exemplify this kind of hero: inspiring, enthusiastic, and always resident-centered. Brooks’ words come from a new Senior Living Executive feature: A column in each issue with thought leadership on Equity & Inclusion (p.26). With the outcry against tragic deaths and the unmistakable evidence of health disparities as COVID-19 continues, Argentum put a group together to take action. This column is only one example. I welcome comments or recommendations for future columns. As you’re called to lead more and more often in this crisis, the Executive Director
Leadership Institute (EDLI) is a way to empower yourself. It's virtual and more accessible this year: over five days, for 2.5 hours each day, weekday afternoons from August 10-19 (with a weekend off, even). Better still, leaders don’t have to choose between the EDLI experience and the conference: You can do both. Learn more at
edli.argentum.org. We at Argentum walked through a demo of the capabilities for the Senior Living
Executive Virtual Conference, and the format and the lineup are extraordinary. It’s easier to plan each day, but more important, I still got that sense that there’s more to explore, and that I could, by chance or design, hear, talk to, and “meet” people who might have the very idea, data, or perspective I need. Take a trial run at the FAQ menu at
conference.argentum.org. While you’re there, take a look at the Senior Living Solutions Guide: Industry suppliers are uploading a trove of white papers, videos, and other collateral on topics from falls prevention to invoicing to software—and you can use it right now. (You might find you like it better than taking home a tote bag full of brochures.) Many people are realizing now the heroes you are, every day. But there’s still much they don’t see. That’s one more value of classes and conferences and other chances to meet up, virtually or face-to-face—you’re supporting and being supported by others who get it.
— Sara Wildberger Editor
P.S.: At a virtual conference, we won’t have to put in thousands of steps in dress shoes.
