MARINE WAVE

WELCOME ABOARD

MARINE WAVE

Atlantic Towing recently welcomed Texas native, Will Eyres, to the team. Will is the Company’s Director or Coastal & Port Service Operations, where he manages tug and barge operations, including all harbour and terminal operations, northern sea lift, tows, and cargo via barge transports.

Marine Wave recently had a chance to catch up with Will to ask him about how he is enjoying his new role and his new life in Canada.

MW: Tell us a bit about yourself

WE: I’m originally from the Dallas, Texas, area. I have a bachelor’s degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and a Master’s Degree in International Affairs from Texas A&M University. I worked for Tidewater Marine for eight and a half years and lived in Mexico, Cameroon, Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago during that time. I am married and have three young children and we just moved into a house in Quispamsis.

MW: What are your hobbies/interests?

WE: I enjoy soccer, skiing, cycling, scuba diving, basketball, weight lifting and riding motorcycles. Being from Texas, I also like bull-riding, barbeque and firing shotguns indiscriminately in the air.

MW: We understand that you speak several languages - which ones and how did you learn them?

WE: I have studied Spanish since grade nine. I started studying Chinese in college and picked up French and Portuguese while working in Cameroon and Brazil respectively. I took three semesters of guitar lessons in college and can’t even play ‘Smoke on the Water’ but I seem to have an easy time with languages and I really like learning new ones. I am still working on Esperanto and Klingon.

WILL EYRES

MW: When did you move to the area, where are you living, and what were your first impressions?

WE: I came to Saint John to start work in July and the family moved up at the beginning of September. We like the area so far and I am especially enjoying the short commute time to work.

MW: What do you find different about living here as opposed to Texas? What differences have you noticed about the people/the culture?

WE: The people here are amazing and genuinely friendly, and the culture is a bit more homogeneous than Texas. Also, not nearly as much Spanish in this area and no real Mexican food (except at our house!). The biggest change though, is that the temperature here is about 20-30 degrees (F) lower, which is lovely in the summer but may cause discomfort in the winter.

MW: How are you feeling about your first Canadian Winter? Do you ski? Do you own a shovel yet?

WE: I really like the cold weather and love to ski. I do have a snow shovel but haven’t yet shown my 5-year-old how to use it. What are the child labor laws like in Canada?

MW: What do you like about working with Atlantic Towing?

WE: The company has an amazing team and a commitment to excellence that is seldom seen in the industry. I also really appreciate the way the company looks after its people.

MW: What are your favorite spots/things to do in Saint John and/or the surrounding area?

WE: I haven’t had a whole lot of exploring time but so far I like the City Market and Rockwood Park.

MW: What was the best career advice you ever received?

WE: Put the right people in the right positions and then let them do their jobs and the numbers will come.
