ATLANTIC TOWING

Atlantic Towing contracted BigLift shipping for the transport of the Atlantic Griffon and the Atlantic Shrike’s Hulls and topsides from Spain to Halifax.

“ We have been executing many interesting projects with our valued client Damen before, and we are honoured that they involved us in yet another technically challenging project.”

phase of the project, the topsides were constructed as separate units, and were then fitted on top of the vessels’ hulls, to ensure alignment and it allowed for preliminary testing in Romania.”

Deconstruction and load for transport of the Atlantic Griffon and the Atlantic Shrike could not be done in Romania, as BigLift’s Heavy Lift ship, Happy Sky, was unable to sail upriver to the shipyard in Galati, so Damen Shipyards fastened the superstructures to the hull for the tow across the Mediterranean to Spain. Once the vessels arrived in Spain, they met up with Happy Sky. Crew used Happy Sky’s cranes to lift the topsides (weighing approximately 650 tonnes each) from the hulls and placed them on their transportation frames.

Given their massive weight, the topside sections were removed in a tandem lift using both ships cranes of 900 metric ton capacity. After which both topsides were reshuffled on deck in a single lift. The weight of lifting equipment was 124 metric tonnes, and the total lifted weight was close to 800 metric tonnes in a single lift.
